Great White Spotted Off Nauset Beach

It’s the second Cape sighting this summer, and the first on the outer Cape.

Researchers spent an hour tracking a Great White shark off the coast of Cape Cod over the weekend, marking the first sighting of the season in the area’s ocean side.

Members of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy said the fish, which they identified as a female, was around 12 to 14 feet long, and was cruising through the waters off of Nauset Beach near Orleans on Saturday afternoon. The conservancy said the shark was roughly one-quarter of a mile off the shoreline.

The crew first saw the animal from a tracker plane that was hovering above the ocean, and caught up with the shark while aboard their research boat.

The conservancy, a non-profit organization tasked with studying the shark population on Cape Cod, and “raising awareness about White sharks as a keystone species of the ocean ecosystem,” named the Great White “Ping,” and added the shark to their growing database. “She is now part of the Massachusetts Shark Research Program White shark population study,” researchers said.

The sighting on the outskirts of Cape Cod came just days after tuna fishermen spotted a Great White shark swimming in Cape Cod Bay. The captain of the F/V Cynthia C got up close and personal with what he described as a 16 to 18 foot female shark. State officials confirmed the captain’s sighting after viewing a video of the shark swimming near his boat.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy will be sending out the spotter plane and boat twice a week as part of an ongoing study in conjunction with the state’s Division of Marine Fisheries.

Can the Conservancy perhaps stop chasing these sharks with boats? It’s like the paparazzi, except these fish don’t deserve to be harassed.

    Can we just kill it?

    • ACHNYC

Can we just kill you? You seem dangerous.

      • Charlie

Funny man. Its a 14-18ft great white shark 1/4 mile off the coast of one of the most populated summer beaches in the country one week before the 4th of July. I think it poses a pretty serious threat. If its not this weekend it will be another weekend. Clearly has shown a desire to swim close to shore. I get it. It’s a shark we shouldn’t just jump to the decision to kill it. But it’s still a shark and if it’s going to be a threat to human life we should kill it. No shark is worth putting a humans life in the balance. You sure are expressing a lot of concern for an animal that would rip you to pieces if it got a chance.

        • Hals

Just don’t wear a seal suit in the water and you will be fine, so stop complaining.

          • Charlie

I’m actually comfortable betting MY legs that you wouldn’t put that theory to the test. So who’s loosin their legs mate?

        • Caroline Kirby

So don’t go out 1/4 mile from shore. I think you have seen Jaws one too many times. The chances of an attack are very slim. But heck, let’s just kill them all! That will show ‘em not to be sharks that are to live in our oceans.

          • Charlie

YES! Someone gets my logical point. Stick it to the sharks! …bastards

        • Brian C

Yeah, let’s just kill every organism that poses the slightest threat to humans…you have a MUCH higher chance being maimed or killed in a car crash or even just walking down the street than you do from being attacked by a great white or any shark for that matter. Shark attacks have been dramatized to be so brutal and terrifying, when truth is, they are both less frequent and almost always less damaging to the human body than severe car crashes. Yes, the car crash example is used a lot, but it’s a pretty good example of how people are extremely willing to take risks and downplay those risks when it comes to a convenience like driving, but choose to exaggerate risks regarding a task that entails no personal effort or involvement such as killing a shark

        • Tom Lagacy

You are a freaking idiot – there are tons of sharks within 1/4 mile off every beach up and down the Atlantic shoreline and the pacific shoreline every hour of every day…. You are swimming in the sharks home, if you’re that bothered by it – go play in a pool

    • Greg smith

Humans cause a threat to every living species on this planet and no one does anything about that. You say kill a shark who has probably never even seen a human in it’s life. That water is it’s habitat. Humans do not belong in the water. We are land dwellers

  • matt

Kill it….Really?????? Do you think these Sharks just appeared? They have been there for as long as people have been swimming on the outer and inner beaches. There has been 1 attack in how many decades on the Cape?

I agree, kill it. I do not want to read about a young boy or girl being killed by one of these. Kill it first, before it takes a child. (Before it kills anyone, as well.)

    • Wolf

Sharks are not that dangerous as humans. Oceans are there home. How would you feel if someone invaded your home and wanted to kill you? You would fight back. Sharks will not attack on a full stomach unless they feel threaten.

  • Sean Mastro

Kill it. You do not want be reading this after someone is taken or attacked this year.

You are an idiot. If you’re that scared, stay in your pool – and not the shark’s home

  • Caroline Kirby

Yeah…because killing one shark is really going to eliminate the threat….just stay out of the deeper water. It isn’t like this is something new. It’s the OCEAN.

  • Anne Szeligowski

I’m going to the Cape for vacation Saturday. This is going to ruin my vacation. I LOVE to swim and now I’m going to be too afraid. Why can’t they capture the shark instead of just giving updates on where it is at the moment.

    • Greg smith

Because that is the shark’s home. You are so ignorant.

      • Stout Colleen

There’s a difference between ignorant (as I’m Ignorant as to how to fix a car engine) and STUPID (which Szeligowski IS). If you go into an animals natural habitant you assume all risks! I’m a SCUBA diver and have come within about 30 feet of the most potentially aggressive sharks…hammerheads. He minded his own business and cruised back to the ruin as I followed the line back up to the craft. Leave them alone- and stay in a pool GF!!!!

        • Tom Lagacy

while I agree with your original statement, I disagree with your second… in fact, quite the opposite – hammerheads are not aggressive whatsoever to humans, so much so that there are several movements by Shark scientists and foundations to have them removed from the list of “man-eaters” – not only do they have a very small bite radius, but there have been few to none attacks on humans… that being said, running into any type of shark while scuba diving has to be frightening as hell

    • Tom Lagacy

You do realize there are TONS of great whites at the Cape all summer long, right? …. and you can’t exactly capture a great white and drop it in the middle of the Atlantic lol… The Whites follow the seals…. food chain, it’s the Circle of Life haha ….

  • Greg smith

OMG someone found a great white! wow!. Who cares. They live there. That is there habitat. Get out of the damn water. We do not belong there. It is his home. GTFO

    • mgs2ss

Stfu. Every place on this damn planet is our habitat. Evict that ****er from his “home” and burn it.

In other news, a bird was spotted flying in the sky today. To all you wimps saying to kill it. With only less than 300 verified Great White attacks on humans it is a non issue. Don’t act like its primary food when you are its home and you will be OK.

    • New England Patriot

Tell that to the body boarder who got bit there the other season.

      • Rob

That would fall under the category of acting like its primary food.

I swear to God there are some stupid people on here…. there are sharks (all different kinds – and some far more dangerous than Whites) – a 1/4 mile off the coast of every shoreline up and down the Atlantic and Pacific ocean every hour of every day – the US averages 15 shark attacks per YEAR. You are far more likely to either get hit by lightening or win the lottery than to get attacked by a shark…. but hey, if it bothers you that much – stay home and stick to your pool. Stay out of the ocean, where – ya know, Sharks’ live..

  • Wolf

The human species is more dangerous then any of the shark species. The ocean is their home and they protect it, but humans been invading their home for along time now killing them for no reason, so of course they will fight back.
