Obama Cartoon Called ‘Racist’ for Reference to Watermelon-Flavored Toothpaste [Updated]

A different version of the same cartoon features raspberry-flavored toothpaste.

Obama

UPDATE, October 1, 11:45 a.m.: The Boston Herald artist who has the Internet in an uproar over his racially-charged cartoon featuring President Barack Obama and a reference to the stereotype that African Americans love watermelon apologized for offending readers, and said he didn’t even consider the negative implications in the drawing.

“It was completely naïve or innocent of any racial suggestion. I wasn’t thinking along those lines at all,” said Jerry Holbert, who has been drawing political cartoons for the newspaper since 1986.

Holbert made the apology during an interview on Boston Herald radio with Joe Battenfeld and Hillary Chabot on Wednesday morning, just hours after snapshots and links to the cartoon went viral.

Holbert told Chabot and Battenfeld that the idea to use “watermelon” instead of “peppermint” or another common toothpaste flavor in the text of the cartoon came after he looked through a cupboard and discovered someone had left “a kids Colgate watermelon flavor” there.

“I, myself, love watermelon, and I thought that would be a great one,” he said.

After images of another version of the cartoon that were featured on a syndicate site called GoComics.com made the rounds online, there was speculation—including from Boston—about whether the Herald chose to change the name of the toothpaste flavor right before the newspaper went to print.

But Holbert clarified Wednesday that it was his intention to include the term “watermelon” in his cartoon, not thinking about the racial connotations, and the switch to “raspberry” was made by outside editors since his cartoons are syndicated.

Holbert told the radio station that on Tuesday night someone wrote to him and asked if they could change the watermelon reference, and he was “confused” by the request. “I changed it to raspberry and sent it back to them,” he said.

Why others noticed the racial implications before publishing, but the Herald didn’t, still remains unclear.

The Herald issued an apology Wednesday as conversations swirled online, gaining national attention, but they failed to address that answer, and merely stated they were sorry for “inadvertently” offending anyone who read the political cartoon.

“I also apologize to anyone I offended, it was not my intention at all,” said Holbert. “I don’t think along the lines of racial jokes, I never do. Naïve, stupid—those kinds of things I understand. But racist, I am definitely not.”

EARLIER:

A political cartoon in Wednesday’s Boston Herald is raising eyebrows and has people calling the newspaper “racist.”

The cartoon depicts President Barack Obama brushing his teeth in the bathroom of the White House, as the man recently accused of storming the building and getting past Secret Service security washes himself in the bathtub to the President’s surprise.

In the political drawing, sketched by resident Herald artist Jerry Holbert, the man in the tub is asking Obama if he has tried “watermelon-flavored” toothpaste, tapping into a stereotype that has ties to slavery, and how African Americans were perceived by white people in the 19th and 20th century. As Theodore Johnson wrote in an article for The Huffington Post last year:

With such deep and persistent iconography, it’s no wonder that disparaging imagery of blacks’ obsession with watermelon can still be found in our society long after slavery and the minstrel period. And much like then, it is used to belittle African-American people and their achievements.

Clearly, the Herald’s approach to the cartoon, and choice to revert to a Watermelon-flavored toothpaste, follows that logic, and has people calling out the publication online.

“This cartoon in today’s Boston Herald is racist and offensive. The Herald should apologize,” said Keith Boykin, a contributor with CNBC.

“Can’t understand why Boston has a rep [for being racist],” one person wrote, after retweeting the cartoon.

“Who thought this was a good idea?,” someone else said.

Others were in shock, merely saying, “Jesus,” and “Wow,” while many were not surprised at all that the Herald decided to take this approach to their daily political attack.

But a similar cartoon posted to an archive of Holbert’s work on GoComics.com doesn’t use the watermelon stereotype—in that version, the toothpaste is raspberry-flavored, even though the rest of the cartoon is drawn up exactly the same:

It’s unclear at what point the choice to use “watermelon” was made before the cartoon went to print and appeared in Wednesday’s newspaper. A call to the Herald’s editorial desk was not immediately returned Wednesday morning, and the paper has yet to comment on the strip, which continues to infuriate readers online.

“So my question on this Boston Herald cartoon is this: Who changed it?,” asked Thomas Fant, on Twitter.

“Kingdom shall rise against kingdom”. It makes perfect sense now. It sure would be nice to know what day the literal rising will begin =(

  • racer

I loved it. This POS potus is insensitive to 1,000 of Christians being slaughtered in Iraq and you dumbazzes are worried about watermelon….really???

    • Mark Jones

Explain why you refer to our president as POS? I find the right’s fetish for excrement bizarre.

      • racer

No matter how long you polish a turd….it will always be a turd…ovomit the turd.

        • Emma

How tragic is must be to live inside yourself. How did you end up so childish, bitter, and hateful? By the way, the “ovomit” term is neither clever or original. It’s been done to death, along with all the other sophomoric nicknames. When I read tirades like the kind you spew, I always wonder what tragedy happened to that person that left them so clearly damaged.

          • racer

So, when you read the truth, you’re upset??? How tragic it is when people like yourself pull your azzholes over your face and scream…I can’t see!

          • entertainedbyidiots

try not to use a word like “sophomoric” (or really, any word) when talking to racer, since he’s not a fan of anything that remotely resembles an educated use of words.

      • Warbo

The right detests excrement. Which is why they detest the POS in the white house. It’s the left that adores it.

Black people are being slaughtered right here at home, and you don’t see whats wrong with all the talk about “watermelon this, gold teeth that, saggy pants gangbanging deadbeat dads welfare moms blah blah blah”

      • racer

“black people are being slaughtered right here”….I must have missed where 1,000s of blacks are being slaughtered, unless of course you are referring to black women aborting their children. Ovomit approves of the “black” genocide.

        • Arione Montiero

Women of all races abort their children every year not just Black women.

“Children” aren’t aborted. Pregnancies are. Fetii aren’t children.

        • beenwiser

yes you definitely missed something. Hundreds of black people die at the hands of law enforcement, security, and vigilantes every year. In 2012 it was every 36 hours, in 2013 it was every 28 hours. If you really think every last one of them was “asking for it” you need to watch the footage of John Crawford being shot at Walmart. Police rushed in and immediately shot him dead, and all he did was carry an air soft pellet gun in an open carry state. There was no threatening behavior in the video besides police. But hey if facts mattered to you, you wouldn’t be a racist

      • Buttfuqer

LMAO, you mean the fucking violent, shitbag CRIMINALS being rightfully killed after committing violent crimes? Blacks are the fucking scourge of this country. The only blacks that are being slaughtered are being killed by other blacks

        • beenwiser

Racists like you are the scourge of this country. We don’t take care of our own because god forbid a black person get one cent of white people’s taxes. We shovel all our money into dropping bombs on brown people because THEY are violent and we’re the good guys. If white people are so awesome, how come so many of us are dummies like you?

You didn’t care about the Christians in Iraq from 2003 to 2009, did you?
They were doing just fine until we invaded in 2003 to replace a secular regime we did not like, by a religious regime we like even less – an opening a religious/sectarian Pandora’s box. What do you think happens to minorities in sectarian strife?

      • Jeremiah Summers

If being fine is, kidnapped being beheaded and dragged through the streets, then yes they were doing great. The only reason it seemed they were fine was because there was a Sadaam controled media (if any at all) that could do or say what they wanted. Ask Christians there if all was well under Sadaam, I did in 2003 when I was there. Granted we didn’t hear about the mass genocides, then of not just Christians but various people groups, but mass graves and chemical bombings tell us a different story.

        • Charles888

Christians were NOT a target of Saddam’s regime as a group. Period. Let’s not invent history. Even his VP/Foreign Minister was Christian, because the Christians are too small a minority and therefore were not a risk to his power.

Saddam was a brutal dictator, but he was not a religious zelot. All he cared about is to stay in power. As a matter of fact, he suppressed religious extremism for the simple reason that it was a risk to his regime.

          • Jeremiah Summers

Read what I was responding to. You didn’t get it. You also didn’t read my full post or look up mass Graves in Iraq obviously. Why even respond? You just wasted a part of your life for nothing. Congrats.

          • Charles888

You are the one who don’t seem capable of following a thread. I am wide-eyed about the gruesomeness of Saddam’s regime (and unfortunately far too many like him around the world).
The thread is SPECIFICALLY about whether the Christians in Iraq are better off before or after the US invasion. Before, they were not targeted because they caused no threat (not because Saddam was humane – far from it). After the invasion, with the spread of religious fundamentalism (Shia and specially Sunni) religious minorities are an easy target. There is hardly any Christian left in the country. They had to flee for their safety. I wonder why it is that such a shock for anybody that it ended up this way.
By the way, this is why Christian Syrians support Assad. Not because they love him. They know he is another gruesome dictator. But the alternative they see is religious fundamentalists threatening their safety and their way of life. Even if they are not killed, they are not too keen on being forced to wear burkas!

          • Jeremiah Summers

Yes, that’s my point.. are you better off supporting a ruthless dictator at the expense of everyone else? Or risking freedom for all at the expense of ousting a current dictator? In mentioning Germany I was referencing a point in the Christian history were they dealt with the devil because it seemed to be a lesser evil. So what if the Jews are being killed.. until the S.S. came knocking on their door. It was the same way with Sadam at some point Christians would have become a target whether that was to garner support of surrounding Muslim nations (which was his plan right before his ouster) or because the Christians would grow a backbone and defend the helpless either way to argue they are or would be better off with Sadam would be a prediction in lunacy. To then say someone didn’t care about the Christians because they chose to support ousting a horrific dictator seems self defeating. The real issue is why the follow through wasn’t supported.

          • Charles888

Ok. I get your point, and usually I agree with your point about dictatorships (such as in pre-WW2 germany). But, I strongly disagree in the case of Iraq (and Syria). The alternative is a lot worse. We are not talking about a choice between a dictatorship vs. a liberal democracy. The dominant alternatives there are various strains of religious fundamentalism (pick your poison).

My point is that secular dictatorships, in the long run, can be moderated because of the pressure of self-preservation. Their own interests force them to play nice (we have hundreds of examples around the world were dictatorships peacefully fizzled).
On the other hand, religious fanatics are immune to these pressures. How can you reason with someone that believes God is telling him to do what he does? Even threatening to kill them will get you nothing – they are looking forward to it and its a reward in this case. The damage they cause is a lot bigger and with the potential to easily spread beyond borders.

          • Jeremiah Summers

Your making a pretty risky assumption about millions if not billions of people. Remember what the Baath party was in its beginnings before it was hijacked. There’s hope but it will be a long road for the area and for the U.S. if we really believe in democracy we have to defend it. Remember the U.S. was formed from a Judeo-Christian mindset that’s religious but allowed free will of belief. The very core is that despite belief and ideology there is value in the individual life given by our creator. There are Muslim believers that feel the same, in fact I would say a majority do. They just need to be awakened and despite the negativity in the Arab spring there are movements for democracy. That needs to be embraced no matter what the cost. Otherwise our global community will implode on itself there’s no longer the option of neutrality. Our neighbors are much to close now to not affect our own way of life.

          • Charles888

            Jeremiah,

I really respect your pint of view, and agree with almost all you wrote. Based on the rest of your post, I know you meant it differently, but it sounded like saying they WE will fight for their democracy until the last drop of THEIR blood. LOL!

Back on a serious note, the risks to these people are so high that I don’t think it gives us the moral ground to make this determination for them.

I am sure there are Muslin believers that feel this way, but you underestimate the virulence and danger of Islamic extremism (and religious extremism in general). Also, if you think the solution is militarily, you misunderstand human nature. Bombing (and military action) will only make the problem worse.

As for the US and the founding fathers, the conditions during Enlightenment at that time were very different. Not even close to the Middle East now. And, although almost all the founders were Christians and greatly influenced by Christian values and sensitivities (not even Judeo-Christian, as I am not sure how fond they were of Jews in the 1700’s), the enterprise they set out was strictly secular. This is nothing like what is happening in the middle east, where by far, the vast majority of apposition to the regimes (whether religious or secular) is much more religious:

            – Iraq: from secular dictatorship to a deadly ethnic and religious cocktail.

            – Syria: currently secular dictatorship to (opposition spans islamic fundalist to even more fundamentalist – pick your poison)

            – Egypt: secular dictatorship to religious back to secular dictatorship

            – Saudi: I don’t know how to classify the ruling family, but certainly if toppled, they will be even more fundamentalist if it is even possible.

Pretty much the rest is all the same.

          • Jeremiah Summers

Living in the middle east for a few years and having fought in a few wars I can tell you this about their ideology take it or leave it, but they retreat when they are utterly embarrassed. When their moon god doesn’t come to the table for them when they are annihilated with bombs, like the fall out of “shock and awe”.. the streets were quiet. For weeks in Baghdad we saw no fighting, it wasn’t until the troops tried to “win the hearts and minds” of the people that the U.S. showed they were week. They need strong and capable leaders, you can’t go from a dictatorship straight to democracy, it doesn’t work that way in their culture or in any culture whether driven by religious ideology or not. It takes time and we’re talking 20 or 30 years. In the mean time he with the biggest guns win and we made the mistake of putting down our guns. I was in the Command Center in 2010 when we started to withdraw giving over areas to the Iraqi military. They weren’t ready, but they saw our weakness and couldn’t wait for us to leave. When I was there in the initial invasion of 2003 before a Iraqi Christian interpreter friend of mine was beheaded and drug through the streets, he looked me in the eye and asked me “what good is it sadiki if the U.S. comes and just leaves us again, our fate will be the same if not worse as it was before” he was right and he died for it. There are many Iraqis who would die for democracy, but they need a strong enough nation to invest in them. We have not been that nation and they doubted us from the beginning. You can say what you want, but you’re arguing against some rather deep experiences.

      • Charles888

Donald, I don’t know. and therefore I am not referring to you in the following statement.

The problem with discussing this topic is that racists really don’t even recognize their position as racist. They have plenty of justification.

I have not read Carr in years. Carr made his name writing about the Irish mob and associated corruption in state government. But he then started venturing into national politics with a very racist and xenophobic tilt to his views (both in writing and on radio).

There is an simple test for acceptability. If I was born (something I have no control off) in that community, and yet lived my life the same way I do now, would I accept was is written. In the case of Carr’s writing (and radio work), the answer is obvious. It is never acceptable to DEHUMANIZE groups of people. It is never acceptable to refer to a minority as animals, EVEN if you do not like what SOME of them do. As someone from an Irish ethnicity, Carr should know that. His ancestors were receiving end of that treatment. It is not ok to do it now to others. Unfortunately, he recognized that he can make a lot of money by exploiting and playing to the prejudice (and racism) of a substantial part of society.

It is sad really that so many people need their ego stroked to feel superior, not for who they are or what they do, but for the great accomplishment of coming out from the right uterus.

        • MoeLarryAndJesus

Is Carr even of Irish descent? His parent’s names don’t suggest that. I think he’s an old school “Yankee” who despises all non-Republicans.

        • Income and Dividend Guru

Charles, just because Carr is against ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION doesn’t mean he’s phobic against any group.

    • entertainedbyidiots

not sure the herald can be considered a respectable news organization. no better than any other publication that was ever owned by murdoch…anyway, if holbert wants to do political cartoons, he should probably understand what that entails before he inserts his entire leg into his mouth.

      • Charles888

Yes. Holbert could or should have noticed, but I cannot label him a racist just for a misstep. I know nothing about him or his previous work (so he may be – and I would hate to be defending a real racist). But people can honestly make such a mistake without noticing. I have to admit that it took me a couple of takes to get it it first. My default reaction to watermelon toothpaste is kids toothpaste. This is the angle I was looking at, and probably many people who have kids.

Right on, though, about the many publications. The sickening phenomena about many right-leaning media the last 15 or 20 years is that they realized that they can make money exploiting racism and playing to prejudice of some people. It has nothing to do with any principled political positions – just nuances playing to deep hatred. The discourse keep getting uglier and uglier, and they no longer have any shame to be associated with these views. It is really sad how much we have regressed as a country in this area.

        • taliba2

Amen; and if you call them on it they say YOU have played the race card. So I call them on it every time: I love playing cards!

Only racists in America are white liberals and the Black Left.

How is saying watermelon racist. I’m Russian and I love watermelon. A lot of Russians love watermelon. African Americans aren’t the only people that like watermelon.

    • entertainedbyidiots

you’re russian, not american, so i wouldn’t expect you to understand the reference.

  • Johnathan Pertolick

Political cartoonist whose entire job lies in writing obvious subtext for current events feigns ignorance about understanding the obvious subtext of his comic.

His entire job is to capture subtext for comic, and we’re supposed to believe that this subtext just passed him by?

What’s next, a Trucker drives a big rig for 25 years then claims he never understood what stop lights are? Come on now.

    • MoeLarryAndJesus

Exactly. I know right-wingers tend to be clueless and stupid, but they don’t live in a vacuum.

      • entertainedbyidiots

you’re right, they live in a bubble.

  • seattlemark952

I suppose it might be newsworthy if he had penned “fried chicken flavored toothpaste”. Not a big deal otherwise. Why are we so over eager to root out and magnify perceived offenses, and turn everyone into victims? We are adults (most of us). This was a CARTOON.

    • Warbo

      Or perhaps banana.

    • MoeLarryAndJesus

Who said anything about “victims,” chuckles? Just pointing out the obvious. Only a total moron wouldn’t get the racist implications of this cartoon. All the teabaggers who sent out that “watermelons on the White House lawn” 5-6 years ago got the joke. It’s not even a little bit obscure.

    • entertainedbyidiots

if you’re an adult, you should have the experience to know that the “blacks love watermelons” is a old stereotype that racists still love to use.

perceived offenses? well, i guess if blacks are offended by this, it must be not be real then…

if anyone around here needs to grow up and put on their big boy pants, it’s you.

  • Warbo

I’ve NEVER heard a slur about African Americans and watermelon. Is that really even a thing?

    • bigyaz

It’s an old one. Fried chicken and watermelon were the stereotypical black foods, and it was a common “joke” decades ago. I don’t know how old Holbert is, but I’m guessing he was, as he said, naive and, if not stupid, at least frightfully unaware.

      • MoeLarryAndJesus

I don’t believe his denial for a minute.

        • entertainedbyidiots

same here. his next cartoon will probably be about dry-cleaners and the owner happens to be chinese….

What else would the owner be if not Chinese?

          • MoeLarryAndJesus

Or Jewish moneylenders with big noses and Yiddish accents. But he has NO IDEA that could offend anyone!

      • Darlene Brown

Sorry but unless he’s five years old everyone knows it’s a racial smear against black people

FRIED CHICKEN ON SUNDAY…..YEP, PERSONS OF THE CLOTH .

      • Income and Dividend Guru

“Frightfully unaware” ?? Why…because in this day and age if you don’t know about fried chicken and watermelons you are ignorant ?

I guess that makes the collective IQ of the ghetto about 180, huh ?

        • bigyaz

No, but your comments make YOU the unaware, unapologetic racist.

      • goku49

I never got it…white people eat more fried chicken than black people!

many people are missing the point, Holbert is framing the ‘intruder’ as the racist one making the watermelon comment. since the intruder didn’t like Obama, he had to be a racist.

      • miked22

Well, he did call Obama a Muslim last week and criticized the Muslim community for not cracking down harder on terrorism and, like this cartoon, he was called a bigot by the usual suspects (Salon), so yeah, he WOULD say something like this too and, as long as it fit the outrage criteria on the Left, he’d get away with it.

        • MoeLarryAndJesus

No, he did not call Obama a Muslim. And again, no, he would not say something like this.
RWNJs like you agree with Maher about nothing. Stop pretending you do.

This is a microaggression. In all of the analysis that I have read about this incident, no one has discussed the historical implications of associating Black people with watermelon. Much like the conversations around Blackface that will inevitably descend with this upcoming Halloween season, it is the media’s responsibility to provide the necessary background to WHY this casual association is a problem. Let me help you. Watch this video from the 1940s that reinforces and reiterates racial stereotypes used against Black people. These associations are still very much with us today, but we don’t provide the history for people to learn WHY it is offensive.

What they ‘wanted’ was to frame the WH intruder as a racist Obama hater …bent on harming him, but the public had already learned he was a mentally unstable veteran, so the racist Obama hater mantra didn’t fly, rather then explain their racist intent they made excuses and apologized.

      • taliba2

Don’t see why mentally unstable veteran racist Obama hater can’t go in one sentence and “fly”.

My goodness….when are we going to stop all this nonsense!! Can’t we just laugh at ourselves and move on. Have we all become so sensitive to every word that may have another meaning. Seems like we are always apologizing.

So the Herald and Holbert should cut the shit and just admit they knew exactly what they were doing. No one is really interested in their bogus non-apology. Let all the teabagger trash let all their racism hang out. It will just speed up their inescapable extinction.

All of the naïveté from Holbert is pure BS. Were the editors asleep when this came across their desk?

Furthermore, what does this racial slur have to do with the intrusion? A man in the 1st tub could have been one the idiot SS personnel.

Obviously the Boston Herald is too incompetent (racist) to involve itself with journalism.

    • http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D0CEED81431F935A35750C0A9619C8B63 ɹǝzıuɐƃɹo ʎʇıunɯɯoɔ

yes, it was intended to frame the ‘intruder’ as racist from the start.

It’s the same old lib media mantra, if you don’t like President Obama, you’re racist. this WH intruder went into Obama’s home and may have wanted to harm him, since the intruder didn’t like Obama he had to be racist, not deranged or unstable …racist.

Holbert decided to inject racism by making it ‘watermelon’ toothpaste and not have him asking for a towel or some other insignificant topic, it was a convenient way for Holbert and the Herald to frame the intruder as being a racist.

“Holbert told the radio station that on Tuesday night someone wrote to
him and asked if they could change the watermelon reference, and he was
“confused” by the request. “I changed it to raspberry and sent it back
    to them,” he said.”

Someone? I can assure you he’s not identifying the person because they let him know in that email exactly why they wanted it changed.

There is no confusing the fact that Holbert intended to portray the cartoon intruder as a racist by having him make that remark.

IF YOU KNOW SOMETHING THAT “WE” DON’T, PLEASE INFORM US.
          Obama has a plan:

Implementing the biggest power grab of all: ObamaCare the law that says anything
          supporters say it does

How this new health law helps create a permanent government recipient class who
will vote Democratic time and again

After healthcare, gain federal control over state run education systems using
          Common Core curriculum

Gaining more control over private business by granting the EPA global governance
in the name of climate change, affecting every aspect of our lives

Blocking energy independence, thereby slowing economic growth and breeding more
          dependency

Gutting welfare reform and keeping millions on the dole

Turning over regulation of the Internet to the United Nations

          The
authors write: “Obama is a left-wing president who is desperately determined to
impose his radical agenda to transform our democratic government and free market
economy into his socialist-style ideal before leaving office in 2016. He’s a
president who is obsessively fixated on keeping the left in permanent power by
turning our two-party system into a one-party monopoly.”

          • Tim Brown

I will nonetheless try. Here we go 84848484. Point by point as illuminated by you and the Teabag party.

            1. If you are someone who decides important issues by polls, then you’re never going to be a leader in the first place. You may make it to congress though as they value polling their corporate puppeteers to ensure their personal portfolio continues to grow exponentially.

            2. National Health care has been demanded by millions who have had enough of the insurance companies methods of denying benefits, raising premiums and copays, while also looking to kick you out of benefits for “pre-existing” conditions. Nationalizing the standards of healthcare and thereby ensuring better health care for all citizens, at more reasonable prices and more comprehensive benefits. Oh, and ensuring no one can by denied for pre-existing, or long terms issues.

            3. About using the Affordable Heathcare to help people should (by mere common sense) help to add to the Dems voter base.. Republicans could have worked to create something, but they didn’t, did they? So you are crying about this successful (Rommney designed program) attracting voters. Don’t forget your party has dedicated their time gerrymandering and shutting out voters. Probably not very smart

            4. Having regulatory bodies like the EPA, DOT, OSHA are necessities we as a nation need to ensure the safety of our workers, the safety of our lands and waterways, and safety of our transportation industries. Since you refer to me as “Son”, I assume you must be very old as I am 54. That being said, let’s take a minute to talk about our Democracy and Capitalism. You do know they are fundamentally, and diametrically opposed concepts, right? Democracy/Republic allows for and protects individual rights and freedoms. Capitalism has already identified that individual liberties and freedoms are hindrances to corporate profit. We’ve seen Capitalism taking hold of our Democracy for the past 30+ years now. If you play out the current trends, the Citizens United Decision, the seizing of employees pension funds, the drawing down of Social Security by Pres. Reagan trying to keep up the military pressure on Russia. Congress legislated not only the ability for companies to move operations overseas, but they’ve awarded them too by allowing them to hide their profits in off-shore tax havens. Pres. Obama has done an extraordinary job and I am sure History will reward him for having such Congressional treason working against him at every turn. Bush/Chenny incurred 22 attacks on foreign soil, the marine barracks, the Cole, and many more but since POTUS took office the only thing Gop can come up with is Benghazi.. Benghazi, BENGHAZI.. There, I screamed it for you. That is all you people got so I wanted to make sure you’re happy, even though the whole thing was about Congress cutting Diplomatic security funding 2 years prior.. The Republican controlled Congress. I think that is most damning. Congressman Issa spent how much time and money persecuting it only to find out he was way wrong. He knew it but thought there wouldn’t be any evidence that surfaced to proof him wrong. Now we got evidence from the attacker.

84848484. I could go on and on but truthfully, I don’t hold much respect for someone who is so sure about his “truth” but decides to hide his name. even here in neverland. This is why you should respect our president. His name is on everything, Congress won’t vote on this new terrorist war but I am sure if it goes well or bad, they will say they knew it all along.. That’s why they will never be leaders either. Obama Care along with those democratic states and Governors who accept expanded Medicaid are very happy with the healthcare plan. Before hospitals had to treat people even if they didn’t have insurance and lose money for doing it. With expanded Medicaid, hospitals are treating insured people now and getting paid for doing so.. how is that bad? About OIL and Drilling and Independence, I think using foreign oil is best. Even if we used ours, we wouldn’t see a mark down. It would go for international rates, like the KeystoneXL pipeline proposal. We will get nothing from it and take on all of the risk of it’s rupturing and poisoning our national aquifer system. Come on. You really got to get the real truth and stop watching FoxNews

          • 848484

YOU ARE CORRECT. I’M 74 AND I HAVE JUST ONE HINT FOR YOU…”SON”. JUST KEEP RIGHT ON VOTING FOR THE LIBERAL THUGS AND THIS COUNTRY WILL KEEP SLIDING INTO THE ABYSS. THE JOB PARTICIPATION RATE IS NOW LOWER THAN WHEN YOUR JIMMY CARTER WAS IN OFFICE…..CARTER AND OBOZO, BOTH LIBERALS. OH BY THE WAY, THERE IS NO LONGER A DEMOCRATIC PARTY. THEY ARE AS NEAR TO BEING COMMUNISTS AS POSSIBLE.

          • Tim Brown

What is sad is, with the exporting of our jobs and the deterioration of our way of life, people have become small minded, waiting for the little crumbs that might fall off the master’s table. This wouldn’t be happening if we maintained our manufacturing and production facilities. Big mills supported whole regions with numerous communities. They allowed room for go-getters to work their way up, while also providing work and pay for folks that just wanted a 9-5. many of these people worked with our kids managing little league teams, etc. Our families were enabled to have a parent home to properly raise their kids. But Congress went about blessing companies to move overseas.. then they allowed them to hide their money in off-shore accounts (Trillions $$). So as they blessed big business, they sold out their real constituents and went about busily doing the bidding of their corporate benefactors. I hate Congress. The fault is well beyond the damage that could be done, or undone by any one president. It’s been 30 years. Now we are hearing about a secret Trans-Pacific Trade Agreement that will open more companies to move to Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, etc. where they have no regulations, or work restrictions at all, No environmental or safety protocols. If you think that sounds good, or you think trading with China or communist regimes is good for America after 74 years of watching what’s been happening, you must be suffering from Alzheimer’s or some kind of dementia and I forgive you. You’ve obviously lost your mind and I’m sorry for you but I have also lived through it and I clearly remember the history of it all.

AND CONSERVATISM IS SADISTIC, AND I WOULD MUCH RATHER HAVE CRAZY AT MY TABLE RATHER THAN SATAN!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Income and Dividend Guru

Hey Tim, why don’t you tell us how great the Great Society has been for blacks the last 50 years as the black family went to pot ?

          crickets…………….

      • Kharla Gordon

FOR WHO??????, AFRICAN AMERICANS CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR THEIR FREEDOM SINCE BEING KIDNAPPED AND DRUG OVER TO A COUNTRY THAT WAS STOLEN FROM A NOTHER RACE OF PEOPLE AFTER YOU SLAUGHTERED THEM.

        • Income and Dividend Guru

Would you prefer to be collecting food stamps, Section 8 housing, welfare, and Obamacare over in Central Africa ? I’m pretty sure they don’t have ’em.

    • Income and Dividend Guru

Right, the same President who meets with Al Sharpton, the anti-Semitic, anti-Asian, anti-white bigot who led KILL THE JEWS marches in Crown Heights.

Yeah, the writer needs sensitivity lessons from Sharpton and Obozo.

  • Liland’ra

More racist tripe from the Boston Herald.

    • Income and Dividend Guru

You mean the Boston Globe ?

  • Ayana Shumate

Free country doesnt mean I can reckless in my freedom of speech.

Also when you are in certain positions that influences large amounts of people then you have a ethical responsibility, civic duty and ethical issues to abide and uphold.

The problem with america is they uphold the law incorrectly and it needs to CHANGE or america will be vulnerable beause we are to busy stuck on ignorance and carelessness.

    • Income and Dividend Guru

Really? So you want the cartoonist to go to jail because you don’t like his thoughts ?

Ever hear of the 1st Amendment ?

      • Ayana Shumate

so in the context of first amendment does that mean bullying is not considered bullying? or teasing someone is not teasing? reckless statements is not reckless? oppression through content is not? offensive statements is never offensive? and words with intention to sabotage is okay? Words of hate is not considered hate? oh okay 1st amendment is free for all with no regards to who it offends or hurts? and public service who influence culture, mindsets and attitudes should not be careful in their speech?

        • Ayana Shumate

And let’s just remember that the military is not comprised of just anglo saxin men and women defending our country. So why offend people who are shipped in countries fighting in all of U.S.
Since we have freedom of speech then I would like for all people of color to NEVER sign up from this day on in any of the US military branches because we are too busy eating and brushing our teeth with watermelons.

        • Income and Dividend Guru

You got it, sis. Just like Malcolm X and the Black Panthers get to spew their anti-Semitic, anti-White nonsense, this guy gets to make a cartoon.

      • Kharla Gordon

NO BECAUSE THAT’S ONE OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS WE AS BLACK PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ayana Shumate

Maybe Isis regime need to give Boston Herald building a visit. How u like that for freedom of speech!

    • Income and Dividend Guru

Why don’t you try it you gutless twit ?

  • Ayana Shumate

I’m a black nubian and watermelon is my favorite. So! Its the intention behind Boston Herald posting that cartoon and Jerry Holbert. Now I see why journalism is a dying occupation its not solely because of technology.

  • hopeful61

This 55 year old seasoned, political cartoonist claiming he was “naive” and “completely innocent” regarding any racial undertones is outrageous and frankly, absurd. Thank you, thank you, Tim Brown (see comments below) for telling like it is.

    • Income and Dividend Guru

      Who cares ? It’s a cartoon….get over it.

      • entertainedbyidiots

oh, we’ll get over it, because you said so. jfc, the ego on this one….

        • Income and Dividend Guru

Worry about the 70% black single-parent rate and the broken families, not a cartoon, pal.

    • Ceci Pipe

He might have been completely ignorant though, because that’s how systemic prejudice works. People don’t hire women not because a man is better at the job, but because they’re so sexist they can’t help but judge women more harshly; unless they’re either 1) forced to hire women or 2) are making a supreme effort to recognise, confront, and disable their biases.

Same goes with racism. Deep seated cultural racism is an infection to the point where people can be racist without even thinking about it. The cartoonist might not have thought “Haha! Obama is black, let’s use watermelon as the flavour”. He might really have just thought that watermelon went really well with a cartoon of Obama without realising why he thought it was a good idea.

It’s why we have quotas, affirmative action, equity, etc. We literally need to force people to get used to the idea that other people are still people.

  • Income and Dividend Guru

Who cares about a cartoon ? Let’s worry about REAL racism…as practiced by left-wing blacks like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and the apologists for black criminal behavior among our elected officials.

Not to mention racial quotas, forced busing, and affirmative action.

    • Ceci Pipe

Quotas are in place because you are so racist, sexist, and otherwise prejudiced, and that those prejudices run so deep, that you can’t tell when you’re hiring a man over a woman because the man is better qualified, or if you’re hiring a “white” over a “black” because the “white” is better qualified, or if that’s just your biases kicking in.

You are so used to an all “white”, all male workforce that hiring anyone else, educating anyone else, listening to anyone else, just isn’t something you think of.

So we force you to live in a world where all people are equal, and then when you start treating people equally we remove the quotas because at that point it won’t matter; you’ll hire the best person for the job, you’ll accept the best student for the degree, not because you’re forced to but because you choose to.

      • Income and Dividend Guru

Sorry, but quotas and preferential policies are ILLEGAL under the 1964 CRA and the Constitution of the United States. These are nothing but licenses to discriminate — a policy of Employment Apartheid, if you will — by a cabal of liberal elites led by the Black Left and left-wing WASPs and Jews.

The #1 victims are white ethnic Catholics — Italians and Irish — along with other white minority groups. Time for the GOP to issue an ultimatum to the Democratic Party and the Left to get rid of these policies — or else.

  • rtrdvt

It’s 2014 people and here we are still, after all these years, complaining about racism. This was a cartoon, people, just a cartoon. Just freakin get over it. 191 wasted comments that say absolutely nothing. WHAT A JOKE!

    • Ayana Shumate

you don’t know until you have walked in my shoes. Real Talk

    • entertainedbyidiots

if you think these comments say absolutely nothing, your reading comprehension sucks.

    • Kharla Gordon

WELL WHAT IF THAT WAS YOUR MAMA INSTEAD!, JUST SAYIN.

  • Bill Willard

Hey, c’mon. This is Boston we are talking about. I was born and brought up in Boston and have lived in 6 major cites on the west coast, in the south and in the southeast of our country and Boston is the closest thing to Mississippi I have come across. Virtually every time I go back to Boston to visit family & friends I hear N-word. I’ve lived in Nashville for 13 years and cannot recall ever hearing that word down here.

Boston may be one of the most educated and culturally diverse cities in the country but there are still many people in the city and surrounding areas that are racist at their core.

    • Income and Dividend Guru

Especially in black ghettos like Roxbury.

  • Rickie Wilson

Malcolm X once asked: What do you call a black man with a PHD? 2014 version: What do you call a black man who is POTUS?

    • entertainedbyidiots

agreed, i think a lot of racists see obama as a great excuse to share their ignorant views on things (i.e. race) with other ignorant people.

  • Megan

I think that this reporter is being ignorant and not taking responsibility of his behavior. Whether this was a mistake or not, as a cartoonist that is going to be published, Holbert should be conscious of what he publishes and be more thoughtful of what he creates.

    • Ceci Pipe

Sure, but systemic prejudice gets to the point where people stop doing it consciously and would otherwise think they’re perfectly okay. It’s more than conceivable that someone could think using watermelon was in good taste and not even consider it to be racist because again, that’s how deep seated prejudicide works.

    (7) The southwest is running out of water, but Obama is helping with his surplus of wet*****!

    (8) Prov. 19:10 (NIV): “It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury – how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!”

    (9) Obama is an expert on beheading. After lunch he tells his secretary: “I’ll be heading back to the golf course!”

    (10)

    (11) Prov. 30:21, 22 (NIV): “the earth…cannot bear up [under] a servant who becomes king.”

  • Jill Beverly

Just think if whites are so racist against the President of the United States, the Leader of the free world as well as Commander & Chief of the military; why are people claiming that white cops aren’t killing unarmed Blacks. Whites show they have no respect for their own President so why would you have any respect for plain Blacks who are unarmed? These types of thing show just how dangerous it is for Black Americans. No Black person is safe. Even Black women are in danger of being beaten. Next I expect a Black unarmed woman to be shot down. We have a serious racist problem in the US. Either whites stand up against racism or all whites are abetting it. We don’t need to hear any more excuses, racism is out of control. So whites you need to step up and speak against it. NO ONE SHOULD JUSTIFY THIS CARTOON, IT HAS NO JUSTIFICATION. It is inciting racism.

    • Income and Dividend Guru

Jill……start worrying about the thousands of blacks killed in Obama’s home town of Chicago just during his presidency and then give the rest of us a call.

We do have a racism problem in this country and the biggest racists are black liberal Democrats and black ghetto communities.

      • Jill Beverly

        Racism is the reasons the
South is still lagging behind the US and the rest of the world. Racism is a
curse on racists. They appear not to realize that this hatred came from their
bitter defeated ancestors. Anyone who would start a war just to keep people in
slavery and lose everything is stupid. Your slave owning ancestors could not
        admit it was time to free and pay Black people. Commonsense, should have said;
wages are at the most a dollar a month or much less. Slave owners were multi-millionaires.
Those stupid people went into a war, when commonsense should have seen, they
had too much to lose. All this racism is bitterness at self for being stupid.
The Bible says to count the cost before going into war. Your ancestors did a
stupid thing. Regret is one of those things it takes a real-man to get over. A
real man would look at it straight and say; the South was wrong. We should have
freed the slaves and helped them to come into society. Racists are still wrong
and you are willing to lose everything again, just as your ancestors did. Now, is
your last chance; admit your ancestors were wrong and you could free yourself.
Otherwise, keep the South in a never-ending fight that you have already lost,
and you will not win, ever. It is hard, but real-men accept their mistakes and
those real-men can become great. You do not understand that your racism has
turned you-people into cowards. Cowards harass people they know they can kill.
Cowards go in groups to kill people they know are unarmed. Cowards meet in
secret to make tactics to kill unarmed men and boys. Weak men need a gun and a
group. Racists really feel and think they are inferior to Black men. In place,
of having secret meeting to destroy a people who just want to live in peace,
you should meet to discuss your inferiority complex. You need psychological
help to get over the loss of the Civil war. Have a psychiatrist meet with all
of you in-group sessions to discuss your inferiority complexes. This is 2015,
the Civil war ended in 1865. Then for a hundred years, you held Black people
down. By lynching, raping, burning crosses, doing dirt, keeping them out and
imprisoning them. Since 1965, you are still doing the same things; your hatred
passes down from generation to generation. It is time for white men to GET-OVER
this. Blacks have been under hatred and racism since the 1400 -1500’s on this Continent,
yet whites have spent that same time trying to hold Blacks down. Holding Black
people down will never stop Black people. Blacks will continue. Yet, you cannot
see that and you still hope to destroy an entire Race of people. Racists held down
themselves while trying to hold Blacks down. Think how far the white Race could
be if you put this many years into inventions, arts, learning, making things.
You have thrown away the same amount of time doing evil, when you could have
used your minds to create. American men have lost innovative thinking; at one
time, the world looked to the USA as the leader in advancement and inventive
ideas. Now, the USA is behind in everything. Our children ranked as the lowest
educated, we are not leading in anything. A large number of racists focused on
stopping our Black President and trying to prevent him from, “doing a good job.”
Other Countries on Earth are working on inventions, on Robots, on taking over
outer space, and on inventing ways to live on other planets. While dumb racists
citizens focus on doing dirt to Black people. Racists are keeping the USA on
Earth. It is time for racism to stop, it is hurting the South more than any
place in the US. It is ironic; racists are bringing down the once greatest
Country in the World. Racists, love America, and stop destroying the South and the
USA. Trying to destroy Black people is destroying you, along with all other
Americans. America deserves to have the best people in the World and that
includes, Black, Brown, Red, Yellow, white, and all Colors. Until racists, love
America, racists are destroying America. Leave Civil War thinking. Think about
        it; IF NOT NOW, WHEN?”

        • Income and Dividend Guru

My slave-owning ancestors ? My ancestors were from Ireland, toots. No slaves there or when we came to this country 100 years ago.

So I’m sorry but I am NOT in debt to you or your race.
