Sometimes it seems all but impossible to find an unpretentious nightspot unencumbered by the, shall we say, nuances of Boston's bar scene-self-important doormen, embittered waitresses, barely legal college kids. Thank goodness for the Hotel Commonwealth's Foundation Lounge. Sultry recorded Latin jazz croons low enough to allow conversation at one of the low and low-lit tables, and flirty waiters deliver top-of-the line drinks. Try any of the bartender's specials—we loved the raspberry vodka, Bacardi LimÔn, Midori, blackberry brandy, and Chambord, straight up with a sugared rim-or nibble at elegant plates of sushi and zensai (Japanese small bites). At last, a place with no pretension-just good, friendly fun.
