Chilacates Will Bring Taco Joy to Mission Hill

It will be the third location for the growing Mexican restaurant group, and its first outside of Jamaica Plain.

Popular taco shop Chilacates is spreading the love: The Jamaica Plain-born taqueria will open a third location in Mission Hill.

Eater Boston got a tip about signage going up at the under-construction Tremont apartment complex (1480 Tremont St.), and Chilacates owner Socrates Abreu confirmed he’s currently working with architects and planners to design the forthcoming restaurant. While his original location near Stony Brook was joined by a second outpost on the well-traveled Centre Street this past winter, the Mission Hill location will be Chilacates’ first location built from the floor up. That will take about four to six months, Abreu estimates.

He has been looking for more locations for a year, he told Eater, and found the Tremont spot to have “the same vibe” as the original Armory Street Chilacates. The expansion also feels like a homecoming for him, as he worked at a nearby pizzeria when he was a teen.

“I saw what Mission Hill used to be, what it’s turning into, and I truly believe in the future of it,” he said.

The location’s proximity to the Longwood Medical Area, and MBTA stations Brigham Circle and Roxbury Crossing are part of the appeal.

Once it opens, the third Chilacates will offer the same, Best of Boston-award winning menu as its sister spots. Make-your-own meal in the form of burritos, quesadillas, tortas, tostadas, enchiladas, salads, and, of course, tacos. Choose from proteins, like spicy chicken tinga, papas con chorizo, beef tongue, and more, including classic carnitas, and upgrades like seasonal grilled fish, and add-ons.

In addition to being the reigning Best Mexican Restaurant per Boston magazine, Chilacates has been recognized by the Improper Bostonian, and even landed on a national best-of list courtesy of Insider and Yelp.

“We have been truly blessed this year!!” Chilacates enthusiastically shared on Facebook after its Improper nod, adding “Hard work pays off.” That goes for the growing restaurant group—and for all of Boston’s Mexican food fans.
