One less obvious benefit to slow cookers: You can plug them in to make dinner in your Airstream travel trailer. Celebrity chef Hugh Acheson will demonstrate just that next month, when his slow-cooker book tour joins forces with the riveted, recreational vehicle brand and makes a stop in Brighton.

Acheson, a James Beard Award-winning, Atlanta-based chef and cookbook author, and a regular Top Chef guest judge, just released his fourth cookbook, The Chef & The Slow Cooker. Per NPR, it’s “a good, hard look at that workhorse kitchen tool of convenience.” With more than 100 recipes, Acheson sets out to reclaim the lame reputation of this home cook’s crutch, and get people cooking from scratch again.

The chef-author has teamed up with Airstream (and other sponsors) to introduce his ideas in 25 cities across the country. At lunchtime on Monday, Nov. 13, they’ll hit Whole Foods in Brighton with an interactive, slow-cooker taco-making demonstration. Acheson will be on hand to answer questions, and the beer-braised pork tacos will be sold to benefit Seed Life Skills, the celebrity chef’s non-profit aimed at getting kids into cooking and science. Signed copies of the new book will also be available, and there are opportunities to win prizes, including a new All-Clad slow cooker.

Can’t think of a reason beyond a seasonal pot roast to dust off your slow cooker? The Chef & The Slow Cooker, out now via Penguin Random House, shows how to use it to poach fish, steam-roast a chicken, and more—certainly useful techniques whether you’re traveling the country via RV, or just meal-planning for the workweek ahead.

Monday, November 13, noon-2 p.m., Whole Foods, 15 Washington St. Brighton, hughacheson.com.
