Oh Soy Tasty

A self-styled ice cream guru prepares to bring his vegan scoops to the masses.

By Amy Traverso

Clockwise from top, Wheeler's vegan ice cream in dragonfruit, pina colada, green tea, rose champagne sorbet, black raspberry, and Mexican chocolate. Photo by Vito Aluia.

To the uninitiated, vegan ice cream might sound like a sorry substitute à la spelt bread or Tofurkey—a consolation prize for restricted eaters. But a bite of Wheeler's Black Label vegan ice cream in flavors like rich chocolate and boozy piña colada may call your pro-dairy leanings into question. This is dessert, not health food; yet as owner Wheeler del Torro is proud to point out, his vanilla has a third of the calories of the Ben & Jerry's version, and zero cholesterol.

For five years, Cambridge-based Wheeler (a self-described "ice cream designer" who, in true artiste fashion, rarely uses his last name) and partner Damion Lord (a former Carvel employee, he developed lactose intolerance after eating too much soft-serve) have been selling their soy-based treats by special order. This month, with their planned South End shop Wheeler's Frozen Desserts, they're bringing their product to the open market, offering as many as 20 to 30 rotating varieties. Most spring from Wheeler's imagination, but he's more than happy to create custom flavors like chocolate pretzel crunch and sweet potato on request. "If you told me, ‘When I was in sixth grade, my favorite flavor was marshmallow bubblegum,' I'll do that," he says.

It all sounds appealing—but is Boston ready to give up full-fat, full-cow ice cream? The timing certainly looks good: The pro-vegan Skinny Bitch book series is a New York Times bestseller. Celebrities like Natalie Portman and Alicia Silverstone have made it glamorous to eschew animal products, and Wheeler is fond of dropping hints about his own celebrity clients (though demurs when pressed for details). In any case, the shop's location, where the South End meets the Fenway, is convenient for both health-conscious foodies and activist students. "I'm on a mission," he says, "to change everyone over from regular ice cream to vegan ice cream."

...but, when does it open?? It's nice to finally see some vegan options arriving in the Back Bay/South End area. Boston is so bleak for vegans compared to the other major cities. Thanks, Wheeler, for taking us in the right direction!
How soon?

I can't wait! How much longer do we have to wait?! Are there any more similar places on the horizon? We need as many special vegan places as we can get!ttx

I also have only heard wonderful things about Wheeler's Ice Cream. I just wish they'd hurry up and expand and start selling in stores since I don't live in the Boston area. But I'm visiting there soon and can't wait to sample their scrumptious delights. I have a feeling this faux ice cream is not just for us vegans.
i can't wait!

Despite all the vegan dessert recipes I create, my all-time favorite sweet-treat has always been ice cream. Vegan ice creams have come a LONG way in recent years, and I am just too eager to try Wheeler's. I've got the spoon, all I need is the pint! Please bring it to Canada soon, Wheeler's!! I'll "scream" loud! :)

It is so great to read that vegan foods are making their way into the mainstream. There are so many great reasons to go vegan: the environment, animal rights, health....awesome vegan food like this is just the icing on the cake (or the ice cream in the bowl)!

Thanks for getting the word out - the vegan world is so rich with fabulous food and Wheeler's is yet another example of how we can eat well/decadently, while enjoying the many benefits of a plant-based diet. My prediction is that hemp foods will be the next great story -- pass that hemp ice cream :-) !
Meatless Foods Go Mainstream

While I'm on the other coast, I find it very exciting that vegan products make mainstream publications. It's not just us vegans who are interested in these types of products however. Many of my friends eat meatless during the week. Not only is it (usually) a healthier cuisine, but it is also more environmentally friendly, and more compassionate. Jane Wright | VeganBits.com

Wheeler's sent me some of their ice cream a ways back, and I have to say that it was most assuredly worth every penny. When they open, GO. Go indulge yourself, and enjoy it. The flavours are spot on, and varied. The chocolate ice cream is even better than dairy chocolate ice cream. They use real chocolate, so that it feels like you're eating a cold chocolate hot cocoa.
Great news!

Vegan ice cream has come such a long way that when done right, it now tastes as good or better than the real thing. Wheeler's is, by all reports, doing it right! I have heard SUCH rave reviews of Wheeler's, but unfortunately live on the West Coast, far from Boston. I can only hope that this Boston location will be such a smash hit that an LA location will come next... please??? :)

Wheeler's - Don't buy from them
Posted by Anonymous | Apr. 19, 2008 at 10:45 AM
COMMENT:
I will never buy anything from these creeps and I encourage you to refrain as well. They parked their van in the middle of Dartmouth street in Boston at rush hour yesterday to make a delivery, freezing traffic for several blocks so their driver wouldn't be inconvenienced. When I called the store to ask that they not do this, "Emily" hung up on me. When I called back, "Emily" refused to give me the owner's contact info. If you want to support a business that doesn't give a crap about other people, Wheeler's Ice Cream is for you. Else, you should take your business someplace else. John

I LOVE chocolate soy ice cream! I thought I would miss cow's milk ice cream more, but I do not! I found the transition very easy and I love the idea that there is no cow's milk involved, and there is no cholesterol! Bring it on! I will try many flavors! I'm so glad a real shop has this treat available.
