The Ultimate: Caesar Salad
We munched leaf upon leaf of anchovy-spiked Romaine to uncover the tastiest interpretation of this classic.
Editor's Note: We're sorry to report that our top pick, Restaurant L, has closed. Read food editor Amy Traverso's blog post about what happened. That means KO Prime moves up to the top spot!
***** Restaurant L
Et tu, Louis? Shoppers aren't the only well-dressed things to be found at Louis Boston's relaunched café.
Chef Marc Orfaly's fork-and-knife Caesar comes sprinkled with toasted panko crumbs, lending buttery crunch to every mouthful. The peppery dressing—made with lemon, Dijon mustard, and anchovy paste—gives the greens a light, tangy bite. There's no better sustenance for the Ides of March. And at $12, it's easier on your AmEx than the Dries Van Noten down the hall. 234 Berkeley St., Boston, 617-266-4680.
Mixed Greens [The Runners-Up]:
**** 1/2 KO Prime: An extra half star for the terrific garlicky croutons. Slightly stingy with the dressing.

**** Abe & Louie's: A traditionalist's dream.

*** Mooo: A fine specimen that cries out for a bit more pizzazz.

** 1/2 Bonfire: Tossed onto the grill, the lettuce comes out a touch wilted. (Good dressing, though.)
