Video: Watch Backbar's Chalk Artist, Catherine Owens, Create Our Cover

If you’ve ever visited Backbar in Union Square—or, for that matter, Eastern Standard, RJ Gourmet, FoMu ice cream, or more—then you’ve seen the work of chalk artist Catherine Owens, who, incidentally, is also the assistant manager at Journeyman, one of this year’s 50 Best Restaurants. If you’ve seen a physical copy of our November issue (or, simply look above) then you’ve seen her work too—Owens is the creative mind behind this year’s cover.

“I hadn’t done anything with chalk art until Backbar opened, and as far as I know they didn’t have much of a plan for what to do with the chalkboard,” Owens told me. “I have nice handwriting, and they asked me to take over. I started putting out business cards there, and people saw my work, and would contact me, and it blossomed from there.”

Watch Owens at work (she says the cover took about “four or five” days to produce) in the video after the jump.

This cover looks like a watered down version of Dana Tanamachi’s work. It’s unbelievable that the time-lapse video was copied as well. How could someone plagiarize so unapologetically? It’s a shame.
