Abby Lane

At the Ritz-Carlton’s downtown cocktail den, you’ll find caramel-hued finishes, burnished wood, and plenty of nooks and crannies for hiding away with a Statehouse Liberal (their twist on a Manhattan). At this brasserie, to say the decor is dramatic is an understatement. Medieval flourishes mix with hunting-lodge trappings, massive rooms house ceiling-hung iron cages and antler chandeliers worthy of Gallic royalty. What makes Bondir one of the most romantic restaurants around? Those sweet sprays of fresh flowers and exquisite farm-to-table fare certainly help. Right in Kendall’s Technology Square, Catalyst trades the rustic brick fireplace for something more cutting edge. It’s a sleek ribbon of flame, housed in a glass box, cutting through the lounge area. But just because it’s modern doesn’t mean it’s not inviting, as anyone who’s spent an evening basking in its warm glow would tell you.

Sometimes, keeping it simple is the only way to go. At Charlie’s, a menu heavy with hearty apps and loaded burgers make it easy to do just that. Trek outside to the restaurant’s (mostly) year-round beer garden, grab a drink, and let the outdoor fireplace do the rest.

And while snowball fights are fun and all, the ice sphere we’re most excited to see is the one they add to your glass. Seeking additional warmth? Behold that 100-year-old fireplace.

This is the go-to spot for the ball-capped and popped collar, and often has a line trailing around the block on Thursday through Saturday nights. But on weekdays, the post-work crowd infiltrates tables for apps and a choice of 16 draught beers. This beloved Washington Square haunt is not shy about one of its best features. For a minute, it looked like the Fireplace was going to be snuffed out—but instead of selling it to Pepe’s Pizzeria, its owner decided to keep it open. Which means we can enjoy its warm hearth and those crispy corn waffles all winter long.

Since what’s traditionally known as happy hour is illegal in our great state, local establishments have been forced to get creative with the concept. Grendel’s, housed in a funky basement space in Harvard Square, puts the best spin on things: Besides a substantial beer selection and surprisingly good sangria, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. all food is half off when you buy a drink.

Sure, the flickering firelight illuminating this Fort Point spot comes not from an actual fireplace but a wood-burning Neapolitan pizza oven, which Pastoral uses to torch everything from its signature pies to roasted vegetables and charred octopus. On sleepy Fort Point Sundays, there aren’t a lot of places open until 1:30 a.m. like Pastoral is, and we’re all too happy to while away our evenings in its golden glow.

A dependable neighborhood favorite since 1999, PJ Ryan’s cranks up the charm when the weather gets cold, thanks to their corner fireplace. And it’s not just the ambiance they’re serious about: They also boast a formidable beer list.

Post 390’s show-stopping modernist fireplace probably isn’t the kind of thing 19th-century squatters had in mind. And the restaurant’s menu, which serves contemporary New American fare, is anything but stodgy. That said, they’re quite reverent of the classics—from clam chowder to Belle Époque-grade absinthe.

The W Lounge strikes a balance that can please just about anyone. It’s hip but not exclusive, crowded but not cramped, loud but not obnoxious.
