Your filet mignon comes with roasted potatoes, but you’re in the mood for a side of, say, Parmesan polenta? No problem. Birch Street touts its kitchen as cooking each dish to order—which means substituting sides and sauces isn’t just tolerated, it’s encouraged.

Alongside the hair salon, the driving school, and other suburban storefronts, Birch Street Bistro in Roslindale Village feels as surprisingly upscale and comfy as a pair of velvet jeans. The interior is all creamy chocolate and caramel, with exposed brick for contrast, and lit by scrolled-metal lamps descending from the high ceiling. The bistro’s menu isn’t as dramatic as its décor, though. The kitchen favors mild-mannered pastas and other solid performers such as filet mignon, veal cordon bleu, and slow-roasted chicken. The popular seafood offerings—notably the pan-seared sole and, when available, the steamed P.E.I. mussels—help set Birch Street apart, as does its small but creative wine list and the unfailingly urbane atmosphere. When there’s live jazz trickling through the air and a new Chilean red in your glass, the suburbs feel far, far away.

You would never know you were in Roslindale. The food and service were really good. Our server went above and beyond by offering us wine tastings and meeting our every need. We really had a wonderful experience. Nice and relaxed without trying to hard. Be back soon!

Brought a party of eight one night and was back a week later with a party of five. Both times service and food was exceptional. Will be back soon. Thank you Birch Street Bistro!

My friends and I came in for drinks and appetizers. Lack of staff service, attention to tables, poorly prepared dishes. Was hoping for something special for my visiting friends. Big disappointment.

Review
I ordered the slow roasted chicken which was extremely salty, as well as the vegtables. My wife ordered a filet of sole which was strange tasting as well as smelled awfful. The manager was called he apologized and offered us a complimentary dessert. Why not give us both a new meal. He could have not charged us and said I' m sorry. But this jerk charged us for an awffull dinner. Last time ever in this establishment.
