Wedged between the Theater District and downtown, the Ladder District has long needed a casual spot where Bostonians could grab a few pre-theater small plates and cocktails that don't break the bank. Ivy fills the void with an Italian menu, an affordable wine list, and plenty of space for socializing. The airy, chandelier-lit front room and bar are packed with hipsters and couples enjoying the rather large primi piatti. Despite the contradiction, these "small plates" are made for sharing: The arrancini (fried risotto stuffed with fontina cheese and prosciutto) and tagliata (sliced tenderloin under a blanket of arugula, a squeeze of lemon, and shaved Parmesan), for instance, are both substantial. And with every bottle on the wine list at $26, theatergoers will be sure to applaud. Note: Lunch service ends at 3 p.m.; dinner begins at 5. Also, the bar stays open for wine and cocktails until 2 a.m.
