Your own personal Indian chef may seem out of reach. But the delectable experience is easily attainable at Masala Art, the brainchild of Vinod and Shikha Kapoor, who also own Bombay Club, Kebab-N-Kurry, and Curry Leaf. Each night executive chef Sunil Soni treats up to 12 lucky guests to a personalized feast at his Spice Bar. First, smell the pungent, freshly ground spices—black cardamom, mace flower, and fenugreek. Then, depending on what strikes your fancy, Soni will whip up dishes that might include meltingly tender chicken in a curry of cashews, ginger, and coriander, or flaky haddock with Indian “barbecue” sauce. The regular dining room offers equal temptation with a vast selection of regional Indian entrées. Standout dishes include the vegetarian chana’s masala—a rich combination of chickpeas, tomatoes, and spices—and the best naan we’ve had this side of Bombay.
