Whoever said getting there is half the fun never had to deal with rotaries, New England’s summertime circles of hell. So it may come as a surprise that locals are streaming to one North Shore roundabout on purpose. Their destination: Ned’s Mobile Groceteria, a food market housed in a shiny one-time plumber’s van parked off Grant Circle, where Route 128 meets Route 127 in Gloucester. Since April, crowds have flocked here for owner Ned Hand’s mix of imported and regional fare—figs from Turkey and St. Augur blue cheese from Auvergne, for example, alongside grass-fed beef from Maine, smoked salmon from a Gloucester fisherman, and loaves from nearby Alexandra’s Breads. The truck itself sports hardwood floors and a cedar-lined refrigeration case courtesy of designer Marcel Albanese, Hand’s partner of 23 years, who tends to offer samples of pretty much everything in the shop when Ned’s not looking.
