Bostonians may not actually miss the original Scollay Square, the seedy burlesque district demolished in the 1960s, but Beacon Hill’s Scollay Square is determined to pay tribute to those churlish days. The tightly packed tables, wide bar, and high ceilings beg to be filled with boisterous, neighborly folk. But the service, while quick, feels as buttoned up as the neighborhood, and the dishes, while polished and heavily portioned, can miss the mark: Oven-fired oysters were smothered in Parmesan and spinach cream, and a grilled lamb rack with goat cheese and rosemary suffered under a tart merlot reduction. The wine list separates “bright, lively, refreshing” choices from “mellow, supple, lacy” bottles for easy pairing, but also includes a confusing group of “intense choices,” meant to be ordered ahead for decanting.
