Strega
A few blocks from Salem’s Pickering Wharf sits the suitably named Strega (Italian for “witch”). The lounge, with colorful, mismatched furniture and ornate chandeliers, is a hot spot, while the dining room—rich with deep reds and dark wood—is an intimate fine-dining hideaway. The menu is separated into small and large plates; small portions include a sampling of crostini, some covered in pesto mascarpone and robust roasted red peppers; larger dishes feature heartier fare, such as pan-roasted halibut with artichokes and Maine crab relish. The service, perhaps overwhelmed by the busy bar scene, can be forgetful and slow.

What a disappointment. The service staff was tripping over themselves and did nothing. The owner barely spoke to anyone who was not 'in'. The food was marginal, at best. There was no selection on the menu. What is this? No coffee just espresso? No dessert? Just tiramasu. No table cloths. We will be 'around the corner' in the North End from now on. This was just a waste of time and money. TV's all over the place were a real distraction. Who wanted to watch "The Godfather" while they were 'dining.' Olive Garden would have been a better experience and a lot less expensive. Back to favorite haunts or new places in the North End we will go next time. Not worth the time, money or energy.

The food here is excellent. One of the best dishes I have had in the North End. After making reservations a week in advance, my girlfriend from out of town and I went there on a Friday night. The second you put down your fork and didnt pick it back u
