The Fed, as it's known, aims to please both modernists and traditionalists. The vibe is boutique hotel with modern art, sleek banquettes, and stellar, if at times slightly rushed, service. But the clientele is pure Beacon Hill. And menu caters to everyone’s inner Yankee. No surprises here: There’s creamy lobster bisque laced with cognac, roasted Alaskan salmon, an utterly oversize portion of Dover sole, and the prerequisite steak and potatoes. Everything is solid, but at these prices (entrees range from $29 to $44) the appeal is old—and big—money. Note: The restaurant serves breakfast until 10:30 a.m. and lunch until 2 p.m. Mon.–Fri. and weekend brunch until 2 p.m.; dinner begins at 5:30.
