Beyond the Pale

In shades of purple and brown, fall makeup’s rich tones suit every face.

Makeup gets sweet as fall’s new all-over chocolate palette replaces the paler shades of summer. Newbury Street makeup artist Katrina Hess, beloved by socialites and satisfied brides, breaks down the trends that dominated the runways and shows how—and how not—to apply them to your own look. The key is to keep it simple when darkening eyes or lips (don’t dare go for both at once). 105 Newbury St., 781-710-6865, katrinahess.com.

1. Gold and bronze shadows are ideal for younger eyes; chocolate shades work on everyone. PRO’S PICK: Vincent Longo Wet Diamond Shimmer shadow, $24, Sephora. TIP: Shimmer does not mean sparkle. “The new versions create a soft, much more natural glow,” Hess says.

2. Since eyes and lips are heavy, foundation should be sheer and light. Or opt for mineral powder for a non-pore-clogging finish. PRO’S PICK: Susan Posnick Colorflo foundation, $64, Katrina Hess. TIP: Always apply liquid foundation with a damp sponge.

3. Deep plums work best on well conditioned, medium-size lips, while taupes complement full and thin kissers. PRO’S PICK: Guerlain Kiss Kiss lip color, $26, Saks Fifth Avenue. TIP: Use a light concealer pencil around your lips to make your pout stand out.

4. Bronzer is back (again) as summer tans fade. But stick to a look that says sun-kissed, not sun-drenched. PRO’S PICK: Paul & Joe pressed powder, $35, Sephora. TIP: Liquid color collects in fine lines, so those with dry skin should avoid tinted moisturizer.

5. Matte or cream shadows last longer and are more forgiving on mature skin. PRO’S PICK: Laura Mercier Evolution of Colour eye shadow, $38, Beauty and Main. TIP: No Q-Tips! “Using the wrong brush is the most common makeup mistake,” Hess says.
