Get This: Anoraks

Summer-weight outerwear comes out of the woods.

As any camper will tell you, the anorak—a lightweight, hooded, preferably waterproof jacket—has long been an important ally in weathering sudden storms and chilly after-dark breezes. Now, it’s also a fashion essential. This year designers like Dries Van Noten, Cole Haan, and Elie Tahari have re-imagined the traditionally utilitarian garment in luxurious fabrics and sleek cuts. For gals, a billowy jacket paired with a thin belt provides an hourglass shape with a quirky edge, while a cropped rendition is perfect over a bikini for a poolside barbecue; men’s brands, including Zegna and Victorinox Swiss Army, are turning out versions in waterproof waxed cotton and canvas with cinched cuffs and drawstring neck details. At once chic, casual, and element-proof, the new anoraks are ideal for brisk midsummer nights and the often soggy summer-fall transition to come—even if your camping days are far behind you.
