What's in Store: Jack Spade

Kate’s other half brings guy stuff to Newbury Street.

By Kevin Alexander

The JFK to Kate Spade’s modern Jackie O aesthetic, Jack Spade has finally opened its first store outside Manhattan. Located in the basement of its feminine counterpart’s Newbury boutique, the 300-square-foot spot draws two kinds of shoppers: plugged-in style-seekers looking to trade up from their Patagonia messenger bags, and dudes who’ve been dragged along with their wife or girlfriend. The décor provides entertaining browsing for both, with knickknacks recalling ’60s-era Boy Scouts (toy rockets), furniture fit for a Rock Hudson flick (mod leather loveseats), and taxidermists’ delights (stuffed squirrels!). But fortunately, the quirky vibe doesn’t seep into the stuff they’re selling. Well made and moderately priced, the laptop totes ($185–$375), wallets ($125), and messenger bags ($145–$325) are sleek, substantial, and masculine enough to lug to Fenway. Just don’t call them purses.
