Boston Design Week at the Boston Design Center

Explore, engage, and enjoy the world of design during Boston Design Week, a 12-day city-wide festival sure to awaken your creative senses. As a part of Design Week, the Boston Design Center (BDC) has arranged a tableau of creative and inspiring events that are sure to inform, delight, and entertain.

New York-based designer Miles Redd is known for his love of grand decorating, high fashion, and timeless glamour. On Wednesday, April 6, he shares his approach to using colors, textures, and fabrics to craft rooms that are both dazzling and supremely livable. A reception and book signing at Schumacher will follow the presentation.

Boston magazine Executive Editor Rachel Slade debates the merits of “Smarter vs. Bigger” with a panel of home experts at a celebratory event for the March “Best Places to Live” issue. Learn about housing trends, gentrification in Boston, and ways to make newfound challenges work in a variety of living situations.

The collaborative exhibit, Recontextualizing Objects opens at the BDC during Boston Design Week. Northeastern University design and engineering students developed entirely new product sets sourced from objects scouted at BDC showrooms. Once selected, the source object was 3D scanned on site, then manipulated using design software. The exhibition of new products and their inspiration will be on display starting March 31. If you’re curious about 3D technology in the design process, don’t miss this opportunity!

At Design Showdown, students vie for a career jumpstart in a Shark Tank-style design competition. Challenged to imagine a live/work space that combines innovative design, functionality, and elements of social responsibility, eight finalists will present their designs before a panel of judges, including Barbara Sallick of Waterworks. Hosted by Steven Favreau of HGTV fame, Design Showdown is a lively event that supports the next generation of New England designers.

Last, but certainly not least, shop the BDC’s annual Sample Sale with discounted prices that give design enthusiasts an opportunity to directly purchase high-end home wares from selected showrooms. The public is always welcome to browse the Boston Design Center, but this is a rare opportunity to enjoy markdowns on luxurious home furnishings. Shop the sale on April 1-2. And if you need assistance with purchasing decisions, take advantage of the BDC’s Designer on Call program.

Now in its third year, Boston Design Week promises to be a fantastic festival that increases public awareness and appreciation of all aspects of design. For a full list of events happening at the Boston Design Center, visit http://bostondesign.com/events.
