Chris Woods had traveled halfway across the world to propose to his girlfriend, Jackie Sherman. But when they arrived at his chosen location—a beautiful cascade in the mountains of Koh Phangan, Thailand—they found the waterfall had run dry. “So do I do this now, or do I wait for a better moment?” Chris remembers thinking. He went with plan B, popping the question a few hours later at the secluded Than Sadet beach. “It couldn’t have worked out any better, but the story to get there was pretty funny,” he says.

For their big day, the Wilton, Connecticut, natives (and current New York City residents) picked a place closer to home: the Damariscotta, Maine, area, where Jackie had spent many summers as a child. “Maine is still an untouched territory,” she says. “It really represents who we are as people, and it was a perfect canvas for us to create what we were looking for and what we wanted out of the day.” After a Catholic ceremony at nearby St. Patrick Church, guests were treated to a waterfront surf-and-turf feast at the rustic Contented Sole restaurant, which Jackie accented with several DIY touches. “I wanted to make it as personal as I possibly could,” she says. “I wanted everybody to feel very loved and at home.”

“The farther north you go, the more Irish music you hear,” Jackie says of the bagpiper who played at the ceremony. “It added to that Maine theme that we were really going for.”

Jackie, Chris, and their families traveled to the reception on a family friend’s boat.

Every table received a “Box Full of Memories,” which the couple filled with a personalized card for each guest. “It ended up being one of the biggest hits of the
wedding,” Jackie says.
