Ceremony Boston Comes to Beacon Hill

Ceremony Boston is set to open this month in an airy third floor loft in Beacon Hill. Owner Alix Childs describes it as an “atelier for brides with a sophisticated sense of style and unique vision for their wedding day.” In addition to gowns, she’ll stock accessories and invitations. We asked Childs a few questions about her new by-appointment-only boutique:
Why open your own boutique and why Boston?
I moved to Boston from New York City in 2011 right after getting engaged. When I was shopping for my own gown, I drove back to New York with my mom (twice!) to find my dream dress. Talking to other brides, I heard the same story again and again. It was clear that there were a whole crop of exciting, new designers [like Sarah Janks, Karen Willis Holmes, and Saraj Seven] who were blowing up Pinterest, and all the wedding blogs, but were just were not yet represented in Boston. To me, this sounded like an amazing opportunity.
What is your favorite part about working with brides?
The idea of being a part of someone’s unique wedding experience has always been really exciting to me.
What is one important thing a bride needs to know when searching for a wedding dress?
Don’t lose track of your own personal style the minute you step into a bridal salon, but don’t be afraid to try on a dress that may not match your initial vision. Part of the fun is playing dress up. Embrace it!
What makes Ceremony Boston unique from other bridal salons?
My goal is to make the whole bridal experience a little more about personal style and a little less about, well, bridal. Weddings are much more individualized than they once were, so it makes a lot of sense that bridal shops would go the same direction. I think that a lot of women want to shop for their wedding dress the same way they shop for their everyday clothes, by going to a boutique that reflects their tastes and has a stylistic point of view rather of a big clearing house of white dresses. The whole experience of shopping at Ceremony will be more laid-back and fun, but still really luxurious. Just like a wedding, we’ve thought through every detail of the gown shopping experience so that it’s more personalized and inspiring.
Special services include: Online photo albums from your fittings for viewing and sharing with friends, personalized vendor referrals, bridal party and groom styling, and specially designed “wedding party” appointments with on-site hair & make-up trials included.
What’s the one piece of advice you’d give to a couple planning the Big Day?
Try to enjoy the months leading up to your wedding as much as possible. It’s such a precious time together as a couple, but it’s so easy to get bogged down in the stress of the planning.
