THE STORY

As the story goes, Jon Rehagen attempted to court his now-wife, Emily Schultzer, for weeks before she realized he was trying to ask her out. “I’d be like, ‘Let’s go to a Sox game,’ and she’d say, ‘I don’t like baseball,’” Jon recalls with a laugh. Luckily, Jon’s persistence paid off: After their first date—a romantic dinner at Smith & Wollensky downtown—the couple became virtually inseparable. “When you know, you know,” Jon says. “It’s such a cliché but, in our case, it’s 100 percent how it happened.”

After getting engaged nearly two years later, the couple thought carefully about how they wanted to celebrate their marriage, initially deciding on a short but sweet ceremony at City Hall. Their minds quickly changed, however, after a trip to Marianmade Farm, a 14-acre flower haven located in Jon’s native state of Maine. “The owner had put a lot of love and care into [the farm],” Emily says. “We were just like, ‘Okay, I guess we’re having a wedding.’”

Opting for what Emily describes as a “party vibe [with] a few ceremonial things thrown in the mix,” the couple hosted a rustic fete inside Marianmade’s timber-frame barn, where nearly 150 friends and relatives gathered for the ceremony and reception. Jon and Emily also set up a tent with high-top tables outside the main event space, encouraging guests to enjoy the farm’s stunning grounds—an ideal spot for corn hole, ladder ball, and other lawn games. “We are kids at heart, so we had kid things to do,” Emily explains. “We wanted to incorporate stuff that was fun, that was us.”

Many of the flowers in the centerpieces and Emily’s bouquet, which included ranunculuses, dahlias, and peonies, were picked fresh from the farm.

“We love each other a lot, and we really hope that came through in the pictures,” the bride says.

When Emily arrived for her appointment at Ceremony, a Boston bridal boutique, the stylist surprised her by pulling this Rue de Seine gown—the very one that Emily serendipitously had been eying at home.

Jon and Emily stepped out into the rain after the ceremony, officiated by a friend of Emily’s. “There were literally 30 minutes of rain right as we were going live,” Jon says. “It’s just like us.”
