THE STORY

Just three weeks into their rapid-fire romance, Ethan Feuer invited Hillary Rader to fly from New York City, where they both reside, to Montreal, his favorite getaway spot. “I really wanted to spend time with her,” Ethan explains.

What Ethan didn’t figure into his plans was a snowstorm—which trapped them at the airport for hours—and negative temperatures that kept them inside for much of the trip. Nevertheless, “we had the best time at the airport,” recalls Hillary, a yoga teacher and aspiring actor. Which is how she knew that Ethan, a coffee importer who travels frequently for work, was a keeper.

Almost a year to the day after they met, Ethan went straight to Hillary’s apartment from a business trip to India and Dubai, carrying souvenirs from his travels. But the most significant gift was yet to come. Ethan told Hillary he wanted to take a photo of her on the rooftop, with the Empire State Building in the background, to send to his friends in India. It was there that he asked her to marry him. Stunned, she asked him to repeat the question. “I blacked out a bit,” she says, blaming a three-day juice cleanse she’d just completed.

Nine months later, the couple married on a ski trail near Hillary’s parents’ vacation house, with a party that Hillary describes as “Jackson Hole without the stuffy” and “New Hampshire without the crunch.” Wedding planner Janie Haas helped the couple create a relaxed, camplike feel—similar to Coachella and other music festivals the couple attends each year—complete with tepees, hide rugs, and steer heads for decoration. But most of all, Ethan and Hillary wanted it “to be a really great time” for their guests, with “really good food, a kick-ass band, and great desserts and coffee.”

And was it? “Totally!” Hillary says.

“I love how fancy we were in an area where we are usually in snow boots and long johns,” says Hillary of her Amsale gown and Ethan’s Tom Ford tuxedo.

To “bring the outside in” to the tent, the couple’s florist hung greenery from the chandeliers.
