So you have a hairstyle in mind, but what about the accessories? A veil can be the most prominent addition to a dress or a simple, demure flourish. Whichever you choose, most stylists recommend bringing the veil or headpiece to your first hair consultation and trial run.
“A veil can really define the style,” says Linda Herman, manager of Andrew Michaels Spa & Salon in Salem. “We ask clients to bring it so we can figure out how to hide or work around it.”
But which is more important: the style or the veil? It’s really up to you and your hair type. “If you have very short hair, try a veil that’s layered but fairly sheer and not overwhelming,” say Michelle Arruda-DeVoe of Demiche Makeup & Image Studio in Melrose.
Stylist Chuck Conklin of Grettacole in Boston says you should also pay attention to the style of your gown. “If the dress is formal, you should dress it up,” he says. “If the dress has a collar, wear the hair up and add a tiara or headpiece to the veil.” If your hair hits above the shoulder, he says, try wearing it half-up and half-down with a longer veil. And no matter what hairpiece you pick, a good stylist can help you decide where to pin it for just the right look.
