These clubs are places to play, mingle and lounge tableside; some have private party rooms for intimate shootouts, replete with personal bartenders. Here’s a hot tip about where to go for a classic game mixed with modern moxie—and what to sip while you wait your shot.

Felt
It’s a pool hall, dance club, restaurant and lounge all in one plush space, with 14 tables scattered on four floors inspired by the Rat Pack’s retro style. Cocktails concocted in-house include the Metro Martini (equal parts Bombay gin, dry vermouth and grapefruit juice) and Dirty Blonde, made with Ketel One Citron vodka, triple sec, sour mix and Sprite. 533 Washington St., 617-350-5555.

The Rack
The biggest pool hall in town at 13,000 square feet has a dress code (no sneakers, hats or T-shirts) and private party room, along with Philippe Starck design elements, a full menu and 14 beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tournament-size pool tables. The club crowd here drinks seasonally, with specialty martinis in the summer and the Bourbon Furnace—a blend of Maker’s Mark with hot cider—in the winter. 24 Clinton St., 617-725-1051.

Boston Billiard Club
Spacious and modern, Boston Billiard Club is not the least bit exclusive, just a stone’s throw from Fenway Park. The late-night weekend crowds veer toward cosmopolitans and cuba libres. The kitchen stays open until 1:30 a.m., which is a rarity in this city. 126 Brookline Ave., 617-536-7665.
