Shopping: Red Bird

Winter is a season too late to spend a day at a charming seaside town—unless that town is Newburyport.

Winter is a season too late to spend a day at a charming seaside town—unless that town is Newburyport. In a few converted mill buildings along the gas lamp-lined streets and brick sidewalks of the historic downtown, you’ll find plenty to make a trip worthwhile.

Just a few doors away at Red Bird Trading Co. (The Tannery, Mill No. 2, 50 Water St., 978-462-5566), owner Kerry Vaughn, ABOVE LEFT, mixes seriously luxe items—Bella Notte bed linens, silky pillows and throws, and an eclectic selection of furniture—with witty vintage signs and whimsical hooks and knobs (some antique).

Seascapes and New England scenes dot the walls at the Walsingham Gallery (47 Merrimac St., 978-499-4411), which features sculptures by local artists, plus a few national and international names.
