Hit Route One for a scenic ride through the coastal communities of Maine. Take the narrow suspension bridge straight to island paradise–and unlike the Cape, there won’t be a seven mile back-up!

The community of Deer Isle, located in the Penobscot Bay region of Maine, is home to year-rounders, summer migrants, Bostonian weekenders, and thousands of lupines—gorgeous blue and purple flowers that grow naturally along the coast. Celebrate the annual arrival of these extraordinary seasonal blossoms at the island’s annual Lupine Festival.

At this year’s event, you’ll take in the beauty by land, air, and sea. Soar above the dipping coastline, crashing waves, and bright blooms with Lupine by Air, a dreamlike aerial view of the scenery. This affordable airplane ride through the skies, offered by Penobscot Island Air, offers a rarely seen view of the untouched coast at a seriously affordable price of $30. Make your reservations early to guarantee a seat on the tiny winged aircraft.

It wouldn’t be a trip ‘Downeast’ without hitting the high seas! Hop aboard the local schooner Summertime for another fabulous look at the lupines, and a taste of true island life. The three-hour tour will take patrons to all of the hidden spots where the flowers flourish. And if you’re more of a land-dweller, take a cruise around the island on the Private Garden Bus Tour.

For more than a century, artists have flocked to Deer Isle, attracted by the community’s quaint lifestyle and inspiring landscapes. Celebrate the island’s rich artistic history at the Island Gallery Night, which will feature unique works by local artists. The creative mix of locals–the craftspeople, artists, musicians, writers, and fishermen that call Deer Isle home–will bring out their finest works at the Craft Fair on Saturday, and the Art Exhibit on Sunday, which will feature “50 Years of Pot Buoys.”

Round out a perfect island day with an evening movie, or pump up the excitement at the annual Variety Show & Concert at the Opera House. The kids will love it, as well as the daily magic shows and kids activities at the Island Community Center. The whole family is bound to find a reason to love lupines!
