Navigator: The Freeport Outlets

At Wicked Whoopies, the sugary-sweet alliteration is forgiven with one whiff of the homemade—you guessed it—whoopie pies. It’s easy to be seduced by Freeport’s many name brands, but a few one-offs are worth a look, too. The inventive ReCYCLEd Bike Art deals in art and jewelry made from bike parts. 32 Main St., 207-865-3100, wickedwhoopies.com; 4 School St., 207-838-2804, mainebikeart.com.

Freeport’s got the usual outdoorsy suspects, as well as upscale labels like Samsonite and Burberry. Twice a year, all the stores remain open overnight for the Freeport Moonlight Fun Run (this year it’s on 8/1 and 11/26). Samsonite, 20 Bow St., 207-865-1720, samsonite.com; Burberry, 42 Main St., 207-865-4400, burberry.com.

This May, the town’s hotly anticipated Freeport Village Station debuts along Main Street with 120,000 square feet of high-end restaurants, more than 27 new retailers—including Nike, Calvin Klein, and Geoffrey Beene—and 550 covered (and very coveted) parking spaces. 207-865-1212, freeportusa.com.

Native brand L. L. Bean has expanded from its humble 1917 storefront to a multishop campus that includes a giant flagship that never (ever) closes, an outlet, L. L. Bean Hunting & Fishing, and L. L. Bean Bike, Boat & Ski. And there’s more: Two additional Bean-owned stores will open this summer, letting browsers and bored kids participate in archery, fly-casting, and kayaking “walk-on adventures.” 95 Main St.,  877-755-2326, llbean.com.

The patio at the Azure Café serves up people-watching alongside Italian-influenced New England fare like lobster scampi and lobster flatbread. For on-the-go sustenance, Linda Bean’s Perfect Maine Lobster Rolls at the corner of Main and Morse is a study in honest advertising. 123 Main St., 207-865-1237, azurecafe.com; 57 Main St., 207-865-1874, lindabeansperfectmaine.com.
