THEIR CULTURES MAY BE WORLDS APART, but Heather and Nick’s East-meets-West marriage was all about togetherness. In a way, it was a tribute to how they met: Although their careers had led them on nearly identical paths — Washington, DC; London; Rhode Island — Heather and Nick never came face to face until after they connected online in 2007. “I tell people that he was following me around the world,” Heather jokes.

Ever since the groom proposed, Heather (who is Jewish) and Nick (who is Indian-Pakistani), knew they wanted to combine their traditions in one ceremony. The couple kicked things off with a mehndi, a traditional Indian party, at the restaurant Mantra in Boston. The next day, a justice of the peace married them in a ceremony that incorporated Jewish, Islamic, and Hindu traditions. “To see everything coming together was really fun,” Heather says.

The ceremony took place in the Taj’s grand ballroom. Heather and Nick stood under a Jewish chuppah, which had a red and gold sari belonging to the groom’s mother draped on top.

Since the Taj’s ballroom is so ornate, the couple chose simple floral arrangements with an orange, gold, and cream color scheme.
