Five CSAs Keeping Fall Food Fresh
When temperatures drop and farmers’ markets wind down for the season, it usually means a return to bland grocery-store comestibles. But this autumn can be different. Thanks to the abundance of farm shares and community-supported agriculture (CSA) offerings out there, the freshest meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables can now be delivered to your doorstep through early winter (and in some cases, year round). Ahead, a few great CSA options that’ll keep you away from the supermarket produce section—for a few more months, at least.
WHAT: Vegetables, jams, mustards, pickles, and eggs.
WHEN: November and December.
HOW MUCH: One-time payment of $219 for weekly half-bushels.
WHY: Silverbrook mixes its own produce with fresh vegetables from six other farms, maximizing variety. Fall members also get first dibs on free-range turkeys, delivered the day before Thanksgiving.

Cape Ann Fresh Catch
WHAT: Shares of fish, including hake, monkfish, and yellowtail flounder.
WHEN: Fall season: September through November.
HOW MUCH: Starts at $21 per week for 4 to 6 pounds of whole fish.
WHY: Fresh fish from local waters, and an emphasis on more-exotic species, make this community-supported fishery a seafood lover’s dream.
WHERE: Weekly and bi-weekly deliveries available.
WHAT: Vegetables, greens, root crops, and fruit.
WHEN: Fall season: September 9 through November 18.
HOW MUCH: One-time payment starts at $220 for small weekly shares (about a half-bushel of produce).
WHY: Enterprise’s fall share features a wide range of veggies—acorn squash, watermelon radish, and more.
WHERE: Pick up shares at 20 Boston locations. The farm also partners with bike company Metro Pedal Power to provide home delivery.
Stillman’s at the Turkey Farm
WHAT: From-the-farm beef, lamb, pork, and poultry, as well as add-ons like eggs.
WHEN: Year round.
HOW MUCH: Starts at $275 for a six-month quarter share (5 pounds per month).
WHY: Livestock are fed prime in-season vegetables during the summer, leading to more-flavorful meat—which Stillman’s offers in large cuts perfect for homey autumn dishes like braises and stews.
WHERE: Pick up shares once a month in J.P., Brookline, or Lunenburg.
