Preview: Crystal Castles

By: Anne Vickman

Any band whose name is a reference to an ’80s cartoon deserves a listen in our book. In this instance, the band in question is Ontario-based duo Crystal Castles, which clearly shares an affinity for the animated series of our childhood, She-Ra: Princess of Power — the band’s name is a random reference to Ms. Ra’s crystalline refuge. The pair plays a dastardly mélange of math rock and electronic beats, creating tracks infused with an intensity akin to beating the last level of Centipede. (Crystal Castles is also an Atari video game. Coincidence? We think not.) These kids have gained a reputation for putting on a bitchin’ live show, so catch them this Saturday, March 19, with Teengirl Fantasy at the House of Blues.

$25–$35, doors 7 p.m., show 8 p.m., 15 Lansdowne St., Boston, 888-693- 2583. Buy tickets here.
