Your daily dose of new Southie-based television shows, this time brought to you by the most arbitrary network out there.

Perhaps the Discovery Channel is really late to the party, or they didn’t get the newsflash that previous Southie-based shows Wicked Single and Southie Rules tanked tremendously. Either way, it’s placing bets on a new reality series based out of South Boston, Dorchester, and Roslindale, called Saint Hoods.

According to a press release, Saint Hoods will focus on powerful neighborhood crews as they “vie for customers in the lucrative business of sports gambling.”

But actually, is sports gambling one of the more frequented source of bad news in these neighborhoods? I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking Southie is reputed for significantly worse things.

Some more details from the press release:

Southie, the largest and most powerful crew in Boston, is run by the notorious Pat Nee, famed for his battles with gangster Whitey Bulger.

Okay. So I suppose this show is timely considering Bulger’s current trial. But should we be suspicious that Whitey Bulger himself is part of the credited cast on the show’s IMDB page?

But here’s the best part:

[The crews] want to maintain their independent status but fear they’ll be forced to pick sides if a Southie versus Rozzie battle erupts. It’s a difficult position to be in, but it’s the way of life on the streets.

Southie versus Rozzie? The way of life on the streets? This is sounding more and more like a press release for a West Side Story spinoff. Holy mac, oh the drama! This show is certainly a far cry from the beachy wonderland portrayed in ABC Family’s The Vineyard, but we’ll have to wait and see if Saint Hoods is more Southie Rules or Boston’s Finest.

Saint Hoods premieres on the Discovery Channel on Friday, August 2, at 10 p.m.
