No Pants Subway Ride

Thank goodness those shockingly low temperatures happened earlier this week instead of this Sunday. Much like those who participated in the Santa Speedo Run in December, the folks who choose to take part in this weekend’s seventh annual No Pants Subway Ride have dodged a dangerous bullet. In case the name hasn’t spelled it out for you already, here’s the deal: People ride the subway. Sans pants. You can participate. Still don’t have a clear picture? Check out more photos from last year.

Free, Sunday, January 12, 1 p.m., updated meetup details will be on Facebook.

Free Reading with Sue Monk Kidd

Oprah selected Sue Monk Kidd’s newest work, The Invention of Wings, for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 before she even finished reading it. In an interview with Kidd in the January issue of O, Oprah explains:

Sue Monk Kidd has written a conversation changer. It is impossible to read this book and not come away thinking differently about our status as women and about all the unsung heroines who played a role in getting us where we are.

Kidd—also known for penning The Secret Life of Bees—will visit Brookline Booksmith tonight to promote and read from The Invention of Wings.

Free, Thursday, January 9, 7 p.m., Brookline Booksmith, 279 Harvard St., Brookline, 617-566-6660,

In a nutshell, Once follows a guy named Guy and a girl named Girl who fall in love and make beautiful romantic music together. Sounds overdone, yet the word “original” was used time and time again to describe it in rave reviews. The movie-turned-musical was nominated for 11 Tony awards in 2012—and won eight of them, so you know you’re in for a worthy treat.

$30+, shows through January 19, Boston Opera House, 539 Washington St., Boston, 617-259-3400,

Elvis Presley Tribute

Oh yes, the king will live this Friday at Midway Cafe. DJ Easy Ed presents the Legends Of New England Rockabilly Showcase, where Rick Bounty will do his best Elvis Presley impersonation with special guests The Red Pennys and Leah & Her J-Walkers.
