Amy Poehler, Taylor Schilling Receive 2014 Emmy Nominations

HBO dominated almost every category, and no one is surprised.

Cambridge-bred comedienne Mindy Kaling and TV personality Carson Daly appeared on The Today Show this morning to announce the nominees for the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. While there are always frontrunners, we did see a few curveballs today as well. But overall, HBO absolutely killed in just about every category this year.

In the drama categories, the usual suspects made the cut: Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Downton Abbey. Some new (but obvious) additions are Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in True Detective, an HBO series which was all the rage last winter. Jon Voight in Ray Donovan scored a nomination, too (a show based on Southie folks who bring their criminal ways to California).

The comedy categories were where the Massachusetts breeds made a strong appearance. Louis CK was nominated for several Emmys for his show Louis, as well as for when he hosted Saturday Night Live. Amy Poehler, who is no stranger to the Emmys, was nominated in the outstanding actress in a comedy category for her role as Leslie Knope in Parks and Recreation. Taylor Schilling was nominated in the same category for her first season on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black. Mindy Kaling, who stars in her own comedy The Mindy Project, did not receive a nod this year for the second year in a row. And this just sucks, because her show is actually one of the funniest out there.

Also frontrunners in the comedy categories were HBO’s Veep, Showtime’s Shameless, and HBO’s new wicked funny show Silicon Valley. HBO’s The Normal Heart dominated the miniseries and movie categories—rightfully so, considering it was one of the most moving segments of television anyone has seen in a long time.

Below, the complete list of nominees for the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The ceremony, hosted by Seth Meyers, will take place August 25, 2014, at 8 p.m. on NBC.
