The centerpiece of the 2014 Revere Beach National Sand Sculpting Festival replicated an iconic World War II image, placing the scene of the flag raising on Iwo Jima atop the five seals of the U.S. Armed Forces. The theme for the festival this year, “Stars and Stripes: A Tribute to Our Nation’s Armed Forces,” was chosen to coincide with the 70th anniversary of D-Day, commemorated in June. As part of what has become an annual tradition, thousands of people made the trip to Revere Beach this past weekend to admire works by master sand sculptors, many of whom returned to the competition from last year.

This year, first place went to “Double Vision” by Rusty Croft from Carmel, California.

Jonathan “Jobi” Bouchard from Montreal, Canada—who won the competition last year, took second place this year with “War—My Heart Tells Me Otherwise.”

“Snail Trail” by Dan Doubleday from Treasure Island, Florida, won third place.

Pavel Myinkov from Moscow, Russia, won the people’s choice award this year with “Time Is Running Out.”
