BU’s All-Female A Cappella Group Will Open for Lena Dunham at the Wilbur

Meet Chordially Yours, Boston University’s all-female a cappella group that just landed themselves a killer act for next month when they’ll be the opening act for Lena Dunham on her “Not That Kind of Girl” tour, which stops at The Wilbur Theatre on October 2.

Chordially Yours is the real deal. Think: the ladies from Pitch Perfect, minus the teen angst, plus way cooler songs. They even nail the beat-boxing thing. Really, if the above “Stacy’s Mom”/”What Makes You Beautiful” mashup isn’t a tell-all in terms of their originality, I don’t know what is. And Lena Dunham is the queen of lady power and extraordinariness.

According to Dunham’s website, she asked local talents to submit videos demonstrating what they’re good at for a chance to be an opening act on Dunham’s tour. The sold-out show at The Wilbur hosted by Brookline Booksmith will feature Dunham reading excerpts from her book and answering audience questions. She also promises some special guests.

On behalf of the group, Chordially Yours’s business manager and BU senior Jen Gregorio sent in an application, which included their Fountains of Wayne/One Direction mashup.

“We received an e-mail a few weeks ago from Lena Dunham’s publishing company [about the selection]. The application was sent a few weeks prior,” she says.

The group was asked to hold off sharing their news for a few weeks. Dunham herself tweeted her selections on Monday, which also included acts for Chicago, Austin, Pasadena, San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland.

As for the a cappella group’s set list, Gregorio says they are “thinking more upbeat songs.”

Their list is tentative right now, but the group is circling songs they’ve previously covered, including the “Stacy’s Mom”/”What Makes You Beautiful” mashup, Britney Spears’s “Crazy,” TLC’s “Unpretty,” and Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child of Mine.”
