Pokey LaFarge writes the kind of music that feels like it’s being conjured out of the Bakelite grill of a Dust Bowl—era radio. Or, as the St. Louis–based singer-songwriter puts it: “It’s not retro music, it’s American music that never died.” His seventh album, Something in the Water, which dropped on April 7, pays homage to his Midwestern roots. “Americans love to reinvent themselves, but you can never really get away from the place that you come from,” LaFarge says. So instead, he’s embracing it full-on, with tracks like the swaying “Cairo, Illinois” and the scorching swing jam “Knockin’ the Dust Off the Rust Belt Tonight.” Catch his take on American blues, early jazz, ragtime, and Western swing at the Sinclair this week.
