Best of the Day: Free Fun Fridays – August 7, 2015

August’s first Free Fun Friday heads to the Boston Harbor Islands; cap the day off with free outdoor movies.

Welcome to Best of the Day, our daily recommendation for what to check out around town. If you do one thing in Boston today, consider this.

Since late June, Free Fun Fridays have been making our headlong plunge into the weekend all the sweeter, as various arts and culture institutions all over the state have been throwing open their doors and showering the public in gratis goodies. August’s installment kicks it up a level—they’re taking you on a boat! Yes, today’s Free Fun Friday heads to the Boston Harbor Islands. To celebrate, the Boston Harbor Islands are offering a special one-day ferry schedule to either Georges Island or Spectacle Island (the most popular of the Boston Harbor Islands). According to the Boston Harbor Islands site, “Free tickets for the Boston Harbor Cruises ferry will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Ferry Center on Long Wharf-North.”

And after you return from the islands, the freebies don’t stop there: Free outdoor movie season is still in full swing. Tonight, catch The Big Sleep at the Boston Harbor Hotel or Cinderella at the Hatch Shell.

Want to get in on the free-for-all, but prefer to remain a landlubber? This week’s Free Fun Friday roster also includes the Greenway Carousel, the Old State House, the Concord Museum, Worcester Historical Museum, Springfield Museums, and the Hancock Shaker Village. On deck next week: The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the USS Constitution Museum, the Cape Cod Children’s Museum, the Fuller Craft Museum, The Children’s Museum of Greater Fall River, Historic Deerfield, and the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center.

Boston Harbor Cruises depart from Long Wharf Ferry Terminal. For more info on Free Fun Fridays, check out highlandstreet.org.
