Boston Comedians Holding Bernie Sanders Fundraising Show

Even local comics are feeling the Bern.

After 20,000 people flooded the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center to hear Bernie Sanders speak last weekend, it’s clear that the city is feeling the Bern. Now, local comedians want to show their love for the Democratic presidential hopeful.

Boston comic Shawn Carter and event planner Suzanne Robichaud are organizing Stand Up for Bernie, a fundraising event that will be held at the Somerville Theatre on Monday, October 12. The goal of the evening is to raise $20,000 for the Sanders campaign.

A number of area headliners are set to appear at the show, including homegrown comedians Jimmy Tingle and Tony V. The night will also feature budding stand-up stars such as Dan Boulger, Christa Weiss, Rick Jenkins, and Kwasi Mensah.

In addition to all the Boston area talent, the organizers have a secret guest who will be stopping by for the fundraiser, although they aren’t willing to reveal who’s going to show up just set.

“I think people will be pleasantly surprised,” an organizer said via e-mail.

From Sarah Silverman to Lewis Black, Sanders has a ton of celebrity backers from the comedy world, although don’t be surprised if the special appearance features someone with more local ties.

Tickets for the show are on sale now and can be purchased at actblue.com. All proceeds from Stand Up for Bernie will go directly to the Sanders campaign.
