The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday that seven films, including Black Mass, are in the running for a makeup and hairstyling Oscar.

The drama earned its spot as a finalist in the category thanks to Johnny Depp’s impressive transformation into the fearsome Boston gangster Whitey Bulger.

While it’s definitely a big honor, only three films will be nominated for a makeup and hairstyling Oscar when the official nominations are announced on January 14. In order to claim a spot in the category, Black Mass will have to compete with several high profile movies, such as Mad Max: Fury Road and Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant.

Unfortunately, the Boston-based film has not been getting a lot of love this awards season.

Black Mass only earned one Screen Actors Guild Award nomination and was completely shut out at the Golden Globes. The Boston Society of Film Critics also shunned the flick during its annual ceremony.
