Matt Damon Wins Best Actor Golden Globe for The Martian

Matt Damon had a pretty good night at the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California on Sunday.

While we’re still scratching our heads over why he was nominated in the comedy category, nevertheless, the Boston-bred actor took home the award for best actor in a comedy for his performance as astronaut Mark Watney in The Martian. The film also beat out top contenders like Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck and Jennifer Lawrence’s Joy (which filmed around Boston) to win the award for best comedy.

Damon proved he deserved the honor by showing off some of his comedic chops during his acceptance speech.

“I’ve made a lot of movies that people just didn’t go see,” Damon joked. “So to make one that everyone enjoyed this much, we had this incredible crew and this incredible cast, and it really all came down to Ridley Scott.”

Damon may have gotten a few laughs on Sunday night, but he was also on the receiving end of an outrageous joke by host Ricky Gervais.

As the comedian introduced Damon on stage, he said the actor was the “only person who Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to.”

Despite receiving a ton of praise from critics, Spotlight–the film based on the Boston Globe‘s investigation into the Catholic Church’s sex abuse scandal–did not have a good night. The movie was shut out in every category including best drama, which went to Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant.

Gervais, of course, also made a quip about the Boston-based film saying, “Roman Polanski called it ‘the best date movie ever,'” which got more groans than laughs from the crowd.

Meanwhile Pixar’s Inside Out, which featured local stars Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling, was named the best animated feature film.
