The news of David Bowie’s death still doesn’t feel real. And the world mourns and reflects on the extraordinary and unparalleled career of the music and fashion icon, who died yesterday aged 69 after an 18-month battle with cancer, we are left with his legacy and his genius.

Over the years, countless bands and artists have covered Bowie, adding a touch of their own personality to the man’s timeless compositions. Below are a sampling of Boston-area performers paying tribute to the Duke in recent years, no doubt a fraction of the renditions that blared out of our rock club’s speakers over the past several decades, but still a captured testament to the vision and sound of one of our generation’s most brilliant talents.

From the Daily Pravda’s constant Bowie tributes to Sidewalk Driver raising the glam stakes, from Gene Dante joining Parlour Bells on stage at T.T. the Bear’s Place for “Under Pressure” to Niki Luparelli’s performances at Oberon to Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys reimagining Bowie through a steamcrunk filter, our stages never sounded so full.
