Carrie Underwood gave a local Coast Guard family the surprise of a lifetime backstage at the TD Garden on Tuesday night.
Prior to her “Storyteller Tour” show, the country superstar and former American Idol winner held a meet and greet with Cape Cod residents Chief Warrant Officer Aaron Van Huysen, his wife Casey, and their two daughters. The special meeting was organized by Carnival Cruise Line and Operation Homefront, which have partnered with Underwood to set up similar events for military families across the country.
“It’s just such a cool thing, I mean country music is all about families,” Underwood said. “It’s about giving back, so I was excited to get involved. It’s such an easy thing for me to do, to get to meet some really incredible people and have them at our shows.”
As you could imagine, the Van Huysens were pretty excited to hang out with Underwood and were thankful for the chance to chat with her.
“For her to come out and just take a minute to acknowledge the military and their sacrifices is really meaningful,” Aaron said.

Not only did the Van Huysens get the VIP treatment in Boston, but they will join hundreds of military families in New York City for a private concert featuring a performance by Underwood in November.
The evening will take place aboard the Carnival Vista ship and will also include a overnight stay for the special guests.
Underwood couldn’t be more thrilled to use her platform to say thanks and give back to families like the Van Huysens.
“I am given a giant stage and a microphone, and it’s really great to get involved with causes, that I can bring awareness to certain things and maybe make other people want to get involved,” she told Boston magazine. “It’s easy for me, while I’m out there doing what I do, I might as well help out wherever I can.”
