Giant Fruit Tree to Be Inflated at Faneuil Hall on Friday

Move over, Boston Public Market, because a new source of fresh produce in Boston is about to blow up—literally.

As a part of the Museum of Fine Art’s Megacities Asia exhibition, a giant fruit tree is set to be inflated at Faneuil Hall on Friday. Created by Seoul-based artist Choi Jeong Hwa, the same artist behind the “Breathing Flower” lotus sculpture in the MFA’s front yard, the public exhibit is aptly titled “Fruit Tree.”

The 23-foot-tall tree features a vibrant mix of both fruits and veggies. While the produce is, of course, artificial, the brightly-colored display is meant to convey a sense of vitality. It’s made with fabric and a steel frame, and will be inflated with an electric air pump.

The inflation ceremony will be held at Marketplace Center at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Mother Juice will be there to provide free smoothie and juice samples, and Mayor Marty Walsh will make an appearance. Selfies are encouraged at the event, as the MFA is offering one free admission for each “fresh pic” taken with the tree.
