During her chat on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night, Jenny Slate talked about how she met a certain special someone, but it wasn’t Captain America.

The Milton-born star has been in the news lately for sparking up a romance with fellow Massachusetts native Chris Evans. The pair recently made their relationship red carpet official at the New York premiere of Slate’s new animated flick The Secret Life of Pets.

“It’s kind of like I got my dream 7th grade boyfriend,” she told Entertainment Tonight at Saturday’s event.

Despite gushing over Evans at the premiere, Slate was able to avoid the new boyfriend conversation while chatting with Colbert. Instead, the former Saturday Night Live comedian explained the strange, true story about how she met a different love in her life: her dog Reggie.

“He’s very old and only has seven teeth,” Slate joked. “I found Reggie on what was maybe one of the worst days of my life.”

The actress said that she found her adorable pooch after a creepy job interview to be an assistant for an opera singer, who turned out to be strange man living in a filthy, “total crack den.”

Slate decided to go to a pet store to cheer herself up after the terrifying encounter, which is where she found her furry friend.

“There were all these puppies and there was this one dog up in the corner,” she said. “They were like, ‘He’s not a puppy and nobody really wants him and we don’t really know what to do with him.’ I took it so personally… and I was like, ‘Sold!'”
