If something’s seemed off with this season’s Red Sox because of a certain missing player, here’s a way to soothe the pain: David Ortiz will be visiting the Prudential Center Barnes and Noble May 18 to sign his new memoir, Papi: My Story. Released Tuesday, the book tells the story of the decades Ortiz spent in baseball and his years with the Boston Red Sox, plus how he got to Major League Baseball all the way from the Dominican Republic.

Ortiz’s literary efforts have already earned some attention over the criticisms he made of former Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine in the book. But it doesn’t seem like it’s bugging Valentine too much. When asked about it, his response was: “I hope he sells a lot of books.”

The event begins at noon, but don’t expect to show up at 12 and immediately meet Big Papi. Swing by in advance to make sure you get your copy of the book at the store, which will be handing out the wristbands required for admission to the event along with the purchase. Don’t bother dragging out all your 2004, 2007, and 2013 World Series memorabilia, though: Ortiz’s signature will only be gracing books at the event.

$19 (for book), Thursday, May 18, 12 p.m., Barnes and Noble, Prudential Center, 800 Boylston St. #179, barnesandnoble.com.
