Back-to-school season usually entails some routine supply shopping, but in Boston, it’s a bit of a different story. By the end of August, tens of thousands of college students—and their parents—make their way into the city with floor lamps, photo collages, and plastic storage bins in tow.

While new students are tucked into their extra-long twin beds, parents check into their fully booked hotels.
