Everything Everywhere All at Once

What it is: The clear front-runner for Best Picture. A truly imaginative absurdist spectacle about the hidden beauty of adult life’s mundanities, as realized through a sci-fi action-adventure tribute primarily set in a Chinese laundry. Stars Crouching TigerHidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh as an exhausted small-business owner juggling the existential weight of her roles as mother, wife, and an adult daughter—while just trying to finish her taxes.

‘Big Five’ nominations (4 out of 5): Best Picture; Best Directing (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert); Actress in a Leading Role (Michelle Yeoh); Writing, Original Screenplay (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert).

What to know: If this doesn’t win, we’ll eat our hotdog fingers. More importantly, if beautiful-human lighthouse Ke Huy Quan doesn’t win Best Supporting Actor, we’ll lead the riot (politely and exuberantly while taking lots of selfies, as only Ke Huy would). But our grown Goonie will — because, every once in a while, true goodness prevails.

Other nominations (11 total): Actor in a Supporting Role (Ke Huy Quan); Actress in a Supporting Role, two (Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu); Costume Design (Shirley Kurata); Film Editing (Paul Rogers); Music, Original Score (Son Lux); Music, Original Song (Music by Ryan Lott, David Byrne and Mitski; Lyric by Ryan Lott and David Byrne).

The Banshees of Inisherin

What it is: A black comedy about an abruptly ended friendship. Set on a fictional Irish island in 1927, it’s written and directed by Martin McDonagh, the British-Irish playwright-filmmaker behind In Bruges (2008) and Best Picture-nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017).

‘Big Five’ nominations (4 out of 5): Best Picture; Best Director (Martin McDonagh); Best Actor in a Leading Role (Colin Farrell); Writing, Original Screenplay (Martin McDonagh).

What to know: If Brendan Fraser doesn’t win for The Whale—the little-seen movie in which Fraser literally embodies a 600-pound recluse—Colin Farrell stands a chance at taking home Best Actor.

Other nominations (9 total): Best Actor in a Supporting Role, two (Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan); Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Kerry Condon); Film Editing (Mikkel E.G. Nielsen); Music, Original Score (Carter Burwell).

The Fabelmans

What it is: Steven Spielberg’s lightly fictionalized childhood memoir and an affecting homage to cinematic salvation that even the New York Times liked.

‘Big Five’ nominations (4 out of 5): Best Picture; Best Directing (Steven Spielberg); Actress in a Leading Role (Michelle Williams); Writing, Original Screenplay (Steven Spielberg & Tony Kushner).

What to know: The Fabelmans won the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Drama) and Spielberg scored Best Director from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, so there’s a chance—a 10% chance, according to current Vegas odds—the filmmaking legend could take home the Best Directing trophy if Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert A/K/A the Daniels don’t for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Other nominations (7 total): Actor in a Supporting Role (Judd Hirsch), Music, Original Score (John Williams), Production Design

Tár

What it is: A highbrow satire on the ugly monstrosity of genius, made with a New Yorker subscriber’s sensibility, starring Cate Blanchett.

‘Big Five’ nominations (4 out of 5): Best Picture; Best Directing (Todd Field); Actress in a Leading Role (Cate Blanchett); Writing, Original Screenplay (Todd Field).

What to know: In the unlikely scenario Michelle Yeoh doesn’t win for Best Actress, Blanchett should take home the trophy. Otherwise, this film’s too erudite to sway Academy voters in any other category.

Other nominations (6 total): Cinematography; Film Editing.
