Back in August 1984, the conventional wisdom was that CEO Kenneth Olsen was no longer playing with a full DEC. It didn’t raise anyone’s confidence when when three high-ranking Digital execs shortly thereafter dumped large blocks of stock a couple of weeks before the company published a disappointing quarterly report. Since then, however, Digital has quietly emerged as the only solid alternative to IBM. And Olsen managed this turnaround without laying off a single soul.
